That's awesome. What really got me was "Valley Green" in Philadelphia (photo 72). That is my turnaround point for my 5k run that I do a few times a week. I swear the building looks the exact same now. I'll have to pay attention tomorrow.

Lovely old photos. Makes me appreciate what technology has done for us, tho. :)

I assume that the hat industry has nearly collapsed over the past hundred years?

On so many pictures, you can play a game of "find the guy who isn't wearing a hat." (Beach photos are exempt. :p)

And...
Jamie Hyneman is timeless.

This one is so clean it almost looks like a model.

It has to be a model. It's New Jersey and none of the people are orange.

The people in the photos felt the same way. They were lightyears ahead of where technology was 50 years earlier. And in 2100 people will look at photos from 2013 and also feel the same way, that we were primitive savages.

Thanks for posting -- those are some exceptional images! The quality of many of these pictures is amazing given the technology they had to work with.

Came in here to say this! It does look exactly the same!

the one with the canoe with the big ass phonograph made me smile. the ipod of 1900,

the pic of the sailors really got my interest,, two in particular , first one of the group of sailors with the two black guys. very unusual in that time. the second is the lone sailor standing by the breach of the big gun. specifically all the machining that it took to make that gun and not have it explode. truly impressive 113 years ago.

denni, i looked at your second link of old warships. man those are cool. i wonder how many people would be upset if they saw one of those old coal burners pulling into NY harbor belching black smoke. lol i be the fire dept would be called for a ship fire.

I was thinking the exact opposite thought. Technology in many ways hasn't changed since those pictures were taken. It's pretty incredible what existed over 100 years ago considering how long ago that seems. The massive ships with precision machined parts would still be difficult to make today. The last two machine shops I worked at had lathes and mills from the 1920s still working perfectly. Many of the machinists used them over models from the 2000s depending on the part because their accuracy and precision were still as good or better.

The bathing suits in the beach pictures are hilarious. Thankfully women don't wear dresses to the beach anymore.

What would that be? In 100 years people will be going through all of our menial photos thinking wtf is there a pancake on a bunnies head.

But aside from color... The camera technology back the is still impressive.

It's amazing how they went from this:

To this:

in less than 40 years. That ship from 1898 looks like it could still be in service today.
