I heard amazon gave NC the big FU and terminated all affiliates in NC that would tie them to collecting the tax.

New Taxes:
-------------
Online sales required to charge sales tax , includes people that have online stores selling from NC, like Amazon affiliates. Amazon has stopped allowing NC affiliates because of this. Also applies to all online sales of music, video, software that are downloaded.

Full listing of new laws in Minnesota: http://www.house.leg.state.mn....o/newlawsall2009-0.asp

Some notable ones:

Layoff alternative now law
Some employers facing economic hardship will have an alternative to laying off their employees.
(Specifically, they will be able to cut their employees' hours and the employees may then file for partial unemployment in proportion to the number of hours cut)

Helping car dealers move on
Dealerships can be adequately compensated if their franchise is affected by manufacturer actions.

?Brandon?s Law? is now law
A new law is designed to help find missing and endangered adults more quickly.
(Basically, this is an expanded version of a law already in place that requires police to follow certain procedures if a child goes missing; this new law applies the same thing to adults)

No lost cell phone charges
Consumers won?t be responsible for charges if notification made.

No laser pointing at planes
Knowingly pointing a laser at an aircraft will be a gross misdemeanor.
(This one kinda made me laugh)

Saying no to REAL ID
Public Safety Department prohibited from taking any steps to implement or plan for implementation of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005.

Vulnerable, elderly adult protection
A maximum 20-year prison term and a felony charge for conviction of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult when the stolen amount exceeds $35,000 is one provision of a new law.

Seatbelt use becomes mandatory
Primary seat belt law requires everyone in a vehicle to buckle up, makes violation a primary offense.
(I thought this was already the case in MN but I guess I was wrong)

Starting today, there are no limits to the tax on gasoline. The state's 29 cent "maximum" tax on gas now becomes the minimum.

The gas one gets me. I think NC is one of the highest 'gas tax' states anyhow.....yeesh!

I dont understand the 'online tax'. Does it mean I will pay NC tax if I order stuff, say, from NewEgg? Or does it mean I'll have to pay tax only if I order something from an NC-based online retailer?

It is basically a tax to get around the issue that people were not buying local products because they could get them online tax free. The state now wants its money for all online transactions :(

What they are targeting is called 'click - throughs'

If you went to a local NC retailers site then used a link to go to a site like amazon where you bought an item, they want it taxed whether the company you bought it from is NC based or not.

So if I ran a site that was a review site for tv and had links to amazon from my site where people clicked , then bought items based on my referral , they want that purchase taxed as sales.

that's good to know, thanks for the info.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Virginia has officially joined 13 other states and the District in putting a ban on texting while behind the wheel.

Starting Wednesday, Virginia drivers who send or read text messages or e-mail over their cell phones while driving could be fined $20 for a first offense and $50 for any subsequent infractions.

A complete slap on the wrist for a behavior that is more dangerous than speeding.

Anyway, I don't think there are any new laws going into effect in NY. We don't even have legislators any more.

Agreed...texting while driving should carry a VERY high fine (like $1000+) and should be at least 6 points on your license. It ranks up there with running a red light in terms of how dangerous it is.

I disagree with the texting while driving ban because its not practical to enforce. Theres a difference between texting and just doing something on your phone. What if I'm opening my phone book to dial a number, thats not texting but I'm sure a cop will say so. Anything that makes a cops job easier to abuse is no good in my book.

It's kind of sad that needed to be made a law.

SB 14: Prohibits anyone on a sex-offender registry from serving on a local school board.

really? they had to make these laws?

Well, think about it. We live in an age where bringing a bottle of Tylenol in school gets you in trouble. Kids are essentially banned from giving themselves any kind of medication while in school. They have had to go to the school nurse's office to do anything.

<- Both kids have severe peanut allergies that can put them in a hospital and we've had to leave epi-pens in the school nurse's office per regulations.

true. just anoying it is this way.
