Hello.

I have some questions that you can maybe answer to me. I'm very confused, and curious how Dell, HP, Toshiba and other computer brands, build their computers. They buy all pieces and built in Personalized Cases for them ? where they buy their monitors (they have ex: HP monitors, but i think they don't build them!) ? In Laptop business, where do they buy their "cases" (i don't know the right word for PC cases in laptops)? They buy theirs processors to INTEL/AMD and put him in laptop "cases" or they buy already builted barebones with everything ?! and to who they buy ?

Please i'm very curious about this. If you know please answer 😉

thnks in advance! 😉

For the internal hardware, they all get the parts shipped to them from the major manufactorers (like nVidia, Intel, etc) OEM, which means it's all straight from the factory stuff. I don't know about cases and other external peripherals though...I know a lot of smaller computer building companies like Velocity Micro and Falcon NW use custom made Lian Lis and Coolermasters and stuff.

you don't know if they buy laptop chassis at one place, and processors ate intel/amd, and built it, or they buy already made barebones ?!

I'm pretty sure that Dell makes their own motherboards, so I'm guessing the other large companies do as well. I would guess dell buys their proccesors directly from intel.

Laptops are almost always custom engineered and very proprietary. Asus makes some laptops that are somewhat customizable. Most manufacturers will allow custom orders to make sure the customer has exactly what they need. Smaller and lower energy components are more expensive, so laptops are more expensive at times compared to PC's.

Most laptops are manufactured by a few ODMs (original design manufatcurers) that work closely with engineering teams from the OEM.

I don't know how up to date this is, but here goes:

Dell Laptops are made by Compal and Quanta and possibly other ODMs
Alienware, Sager, Prostar are made by Clevo (and many Gaming Laptop Brands)
IBMs are made by Quanta and LG and possibly other ODMs
Gateways are made by Quanta and LG and possibly other ODMs
Apples are made by Quanta and Asus

IIRC. a few years ago the largest laptop manufacturers were Quanta, Compal, and Toshiba, which accounted for about 60% of all laptops manufactured.

Again, I am not sure how up to date this information is, I haven't researched it for a few years.

But they buy it ALL MADE by that manufacturers ? or they buy it by parts and built it by their own ? like...buy board/processor to intel, "case/chassis" to Compal, graphics to nvidia and put it all together, or they just send the specifications (including case/chassis design) to manufacturer and manufacturer sends back the laptop ready to sell ? And in Apple ? they probably make "chassis/case" design built in apple's and only place board/processor in "chassis/case" made by themselves...

Let me straighten this out a bit.....

The majors.... IBM/Lenovo, HP, Dell, and some others design their own cases, and in some cases the motherboards. THe motherboards are specifically designed in many cases to fit in that specific manufacturer's case.

So.... once the design is don they contract out final manufacture/assembly and tooling to one of the various sub-contract manufacturers... ie; LG, Quanta, Compal as other's noted.

Dell has a habit of borrowing design form others... ie; their X1 notebook is the same as a Samsung - they are licensing the design from Samsung.

IBM/Lenovo design everything in their line, and actually (even before Lenovo aquired the IBM PC Division) co-own and operate the assembly lines for quality assurance.

So No,,,,, everybody isn't buying the same case, and mother board as everyone else.... They are source the exact same CPU's, chipsets, etc.......
