Manufacturer prices-Distributor prices

I am curious- does anyone have any links to or any knowledge about how much manufacturers and distributors charge retailers for the pc hardware they sell? Thanks

I'm going to take a guess and say that it's less than the retailers charge you. 🙂

Profit margins are a closely kept secret for most companies. For most technology, it's retailers aren't making a huge profit per item, because of competition.

I bought a dell 2007fpw (or wfp, whatever it is) for $415 shipped. A friend of mine who works at a big distributer says he coulda gotten it for me for $200. Somehow I find that hard to believe though.

Most likely either empty boasting, or he'd get you one that "fell off the truck" (i.e. stolen).

Monitors also tend to be a higher priced item in general, especially wide-screen, and with the Dell branding and warranty. It's not entirely unbelievable that they'd be making 100 bucks or more profit on them, ignoring warranty claim costs. For 200 bucks from a friend you may not have gotten any warranty coverage.

Actually, some retailers take little/no profit on certain items. Take newegg for instance...they're practically going broke selling the E6400 for $400. That's a huge hit for them to take just to get you onto their website.

From my time selling TVs are BestBuy.

A TV of other big ticket item may only have a mark up of about 30%, not a lot in retail. While the cables, fancy remote, nice power surge would have up 100% mark ups. That is where they make money.

How many of you have looked at an ad and said, "Bestbuy is $59 cheaper on the tv, but CC charges less for the cables and other stuff."
You don't, so you chase the cheap TV and pay more of the other stuff you "need"
