Manual transmission poll

Do you have to step on the clutch to start your car?

I've regarded this as a north american idiot-resistant thing, because most every car I've ever driven overseas didn't require me to press the clutch.

Yes - Asian.

It's been mandated in America ever since the Audi 5000 debacle of the late 80s. Every manual car sold USDM must have the clutch depressed before it will start, the same as every auto must have the brake pedal depressed. It's second nature for me anyway. I've been known to bang the floorboard with my left foot if I hop into someone else's auto.

I drive an Audi 5000 😉
Two of them actually. (one 5spd AWD, one auto FWD)

But yeah.. the audi thing was about the Automatic tranny brake interlock, not about lack of clutch switch. as far as i remember.

True, but the clutch switch came out of all that (as did the brake switch on autos). You start finding them in USDM cars beginning in about '90.

You have to with most domestics - starter lockout switch present on clutch pedal.

I think this is dumb. If you car stalled on a RR track you could put it in gear and crank the engine to get it off the tracks.

Unless you're a cop chasing a motorcycle.

I hit the parking brake in my parents' Suburban doing that. 😱 Thank God GM brakes suck.
