OK, when PROPERLY USED, how long should i expect a normal clutch to last doing normal day to day driving and the occasional road trip, nothing special?

I got mine replaced under warranty at 18k miles because one of the bearings went bad... made a high pitched screeching noise whenever I'd disengage it. So I guess I don't count :p

usually a clutch will last over a hundred thousand miles. My 91 Prelude lasted to about 101,000 before it needed to be changed and my old 87 Toyota Pick Up lasted till about 107,000 miles.

There are many factors when considering the longevity of a clutch ;

Type of vehicle
How it is driven (Highway/City)
The skill of the driver(s)
Climate

Generally a clutch should last at least 80,000 miles,I have seen them go in 20,000 and have seen them last 250,000.

Performance driver with a 95 BMW 325i w/79K miles. ;)

Just had the car worked on and the mechanic said the clutch is still fine. Thinks it has at least another year left.

157,000 on a 92 Civic (still going fairly strong).
207,000 on a 94 Saturn (original AFAIK, still going).
Over 160,000 on an 86 Nova (Corolla)
110,000 on a 92 Maxima SE.

It's all about the type of driving, and the skill of the driver.

IMHO, if it doesn't last more than 100,000 miles, even with a lot of city driving, you're not driving it very well.

car Opel Corsa, 110000 miles still first clutch - mostly city driving, car was owned by a car rental company then by a women (no I am no macho but judging from the condition the car was in, the clutch got abused too)

Anyway Nowadays u dont have to worry about the clutch there are other parts in the car that could break earlier...

91 Accord. Replaced it at 131K. Looking at the one that came out, it still had quite a bit of life left on it.

I would let them...in a parking lot, maybe.

I learned on a '69 Ford Bronco 3-on-the-tree.....I miss that car. :(

I wouldn't mind, clutches aren't expensive enough to be that anal about.

Besides, if they're even marginally intelligent they should be able to pick it up with minimal damage to the vehicle.

No one would teach me, so I bought a car with one, a 1982 Mustang GL with the 5.0 liter engine. My salesman gave me a few lessons in a parking lot a week before the car came in. To this day I'll never forget the look on the face of this girl when I almost slammed into her car. I couldn't get my car in gear, and just slid down this hill until I remembered I still had brakes. Damn I miss that car.

I've got a 1994 Altima with 107k on it that still has the original clutch. It's got kind of a narrow band of engagement (easy to either rev the engine a bit or bog it a bit) but doesn't slip or anything. I'm pretty nice to it tho, no downshifting without matching revs, drop it into neutral while coasting to a stop, etc.

170K on an 85 Toyota Celica. Clutch was slipping 'a bit', but still drivable, when sold. Was 2nd owner.
122K on an 89 Chevy S10 that had 7 miles when purchased new. Sold three months ago. Clutch worked well.
115K on a 77 Datsun B210. Clutch in good condition when sold. Was 2nd owner.
102K on an 85 VW Jetta, purchased new. Clutch in good condition when sold.

55,000 kms and still working fine :p

100K miles sounds about right

my friend had to replace his clutch on his 240SX just below 200,000 kms.
