Also being a diver, seems pretty easy to jury rig something.

But I think some of us (myself included) have probably given this guy more credit than he deserves. Turns out his truck broke down and he ran a few hundred yards away to take hostages. Typical desperate fugitive scenario

Maybe I misunderstood you but you made it sound like the mask meets the nose and doesn't cover it. The mask covers the noise.
