Dear MangaStream supporter,

It's with a heavy heart that I make the following announcement. MangaStream will no longer be releasing the following series:

- Naruto
- Bleach
- One Piece
- Hunter x Hunter
- Katekyo Hitman Reborn
- Claymore
- D.Gray-man

VIZ Media has demanded that we end our scanlation work for all of the above. This comes despite our best efforts to pursuade fans into supporting official distributors by being the only group to actively prevent an archive from forming on their website through the removal of chapters that are older than a couple weeks. They've succeeded in little more than invoking inconvenience to the community as their digital magazine missed the mark; it runs several issues behind and only features 3 of the above series. So long as their product continues to be slow, awkward and inferior to something a ragtag group of nobodies can churn out in a few hours - fans will continue to look to scanlation groups and aggregators for their weekly fix.

The aggressive and escalating nature of their threats have forced our hand into removing the content. MangaStream will no longer be posting full scanlations for any of the aforementioned series, we will instead focus our efforts onto the series we do that are not licensed by VIZ Media (you can assume everything currently on our directory will be continued).

Our final message to our loyal JUMP audience will be this:
Thank you for supporting us over the past two years and making Mangastream your home away from home. It was a pleasure sharing our time with fans who were just as passionate and dedicated as we were.

Although MangaStream will no longer be hosting any of the Jump series, if it's something our fanbase is interested in, we're considering leveraging our connections to bring you accurate spoiler summaries for the Jump chapters as early as possible. We know this isn't much, but hope it can whet your appetite until the dozens of aggregators release the official Jump chapters on Wednesday.

I know... reading the Big Shounen Three was probably the highlight of waking up on Wednesday!

I found their comments about VIZ's online endeavors amusing. There's almost always at least one good scanlation group (and even fansub goup) that does a far better job than the actual English distributor. That even includes the fact that scanlators/fansubbers don't get paid and typically have to work with "lesser sources" (i.e. scans from WSJ, etc.).

I remember back when I used to scanlate, and it was pretty crazy how people would essentially give up their Friday nights just to get Naruto out to the public (who got quite ravenous if it didn't get released until Saturday). We didn't have a raw provider, and we ended up getting them from some Japanese file sharing program called "Winny" (I think that's right). I saw some of those scans... and I felt rather bad for the cleaners!

^^ This is true. Some of the scanlators actually take time to explain the difference between what it says and what it means, because sometimes the manga will say something that is of particular meaning in Japanese culture that is different than the literal translation.

I always look forward myself to Wednesday mornings because that is when all of the big 3 get translated.

One other difference that I see in anime is that the fansubbers also take the time to translate the little things in the background such as signs and stuff. This isn't unheard of in official anime releases, but since the fansubs use soft subs, they're able to actually overlay the English text over the original Japanese item. Most DVDs that I've seen simply throw the translated signage (and other things) in between lines of a conversation.

Those translation notes in manga really depend on your translators though. Some of them are much more adamant about including notes in their translation script than others are. I'm pretty sure I added a few notes into Initial D during my time working on that. There are a lot of automotive terms in there that people may not understand though, and I'd much rather keep the text short (e.g. "NA engine" vs. "naturally aspirated engine"). It was almost necessary when Ryousuke (my avatar) went on one of this spiels explaining the race mechanics.
