It's really too bad, their distro really seemed to be coming together nicely. :(

Hopefully, the intellectual property will go to someone who can make good use of it and keep it alive.

I guess they thought they could make it up in service calls. However, with so many tekkies installing Linux, they'll resolve their own issues - and never make those support calls.

Sad to hear, but at least they provide a stable OS unlike MS. That explains the lack of tech support calls.

Well I like Linux but I have a good bit of MSFT stock so this is not bad news for me.

I don't think it's as bad as it sounds. From the discussion on slashdot, my understanding was that it was more of a move to allow them to reorganize their debt. I don't think they're closing up shop or anything that extreme.

That's a terrible quote, nearly implying that Red Hat is in fiscal problems themselves.

I called this a long time ago. Red Hat is the only financially stable Linux OS company (mainly because the Linux OS isn't their lifeblood), with SuSE a distant second. Any other commercial players are most likely doomed for failure, and the writing was clearly on the wall for Mandrake for months now. Corporate Darwinism will leave Red Hat and SuSE in a stronger position going forward, which should be good for Linux in general.

With so many distros out there, there's simply no money to be made on a free beer OS, and a lot of duplicated effort to go along with the innovation. Besides, free speech software will be no worse off because some unviable companies (no matter how pro open-source) leave the field.

Well actually this is true for me as well. I use Redhat and have never played around with Mandrake.

I would wish harm upon Microsoft just to hurt Ameesh's stock options and future but then that would harm me too.

There were popups? Oh, wait, you are probably using that great Microsoft technology called Internet Explorer! Duh. ;)

Anyhow, this isnt a bad thing. Their work will be picked up by someone else and only strengthen Linux in general. Maybe they will release any of their closed source stuff under a free license, or the GPL (if they have any closed source stuff).

Keep laughing Ameesh, after all, this is the first company to have money problems since the tech bubble burst.

Why wish ill will on anyone? There are companies out there proving that they can make money off of open source and free software. There are US government agencies that depend on open source and free software. There are governments that promote the use of F/OSS! There are companies proving that they can work well with open source software (even if they are hypocritical in their claim to being an open technology company). I believe there is a place for most of these companies out there. Some just have not found their niche yet.
