I don't know if this is normal, but it doesn't seem like it. I installed Mandrake Linux on my computer. Now I have a tri boot system(Windows 98, 2000, Mandrake). Thing is, when Mandrake Linux boots up, it gives me this black screen with a picture of a penguin on it(A really deformed looking penguin) and it keeps flashing. A lot. It stops flashing when I press enter and there is says something like localhost login or soemthing. I can't egt past that screen. Call me stupid, but I am just a newb to Linux and figured that Mandrake would be the best thing for me to start on. Any help?

Thanks a billion,

Its trying to startup X Windows and failing... and trying again and again etc.. the video card settings are messed up or something.

You need to reconfigure your XWindows...

Seems like your XFree86 Config file is messed up. If you want to fix it go to irc.openprojects.net room #mandrake and ask around.

He isn't getting to X yet. It is spash that mandrake shows when it boots (hate it) and localhost.localdomain is a login prompt. I guess it tries to set up video mode that you card doesn't support.
Try to load with alternative boot option (type it during pause before it boots)

linux-nonfb
OR
failsafe

And configure your video card. BTW which one are you using?

GeForce3 Ti200. When I installed Mandrake, it automatically choose the generic GeForce3 driver...

workaround

p.s. You'd better install Nvidia drivers - they are great. Don't use rpms - compile it - it is easy (follow the instructions). Better yet, download 8.2 and start with it
