Mandrake 9.1rc2......Nice!

This is my first time using Mandrake, and my first impression is very nice windows manager & well balance distro.

It seemed to be a bit quicker than Yoper in KDE 3.1.

The intall is painless nicer than RH8.0 or Yoper (but auto detech is slightly weaker than RH8.0). It give the user a bit more control & information over the system during install then the previous 2 mentioned distro. Mandrake 9.1 give the user the option to chose which type of services that user want to install. But, it doesn't tell the user which packages that come along with the chosen option (would be nice if it add an informative screen like Debian during the picking process). The package install view can only be seen during the actual extract/install time when click on advance view, which in my book is too late.

However, it have the most advance configuration screen one could ask for (networking with Windows Domain, Remote Desktop, NFS, etc...) prior to first boot.

Another bonus is that the 3 disks ISO come pack with usefull apps, and the menu bar have the cleanest & most organize that I have seen on a Linux distro.

IMHO, Mandrake 9.1 is the desktop rival to Windows, and is capable of replacing Windows XP.

Make some screenshots for us to see, i'll love to see them. Im windows xp but oi brought mandrake version 8.1 awhiel ago.

Mandrake 9.1 ++ KDE 3.1 sreenshot galore.

The start application bar lay out is extreamly clean on KDE 3.1 compare to 3.0. Mandrake control center feature is beautifully done (cleaner & more usable than Windows XP) which is a feature that borrowed from Windows, and it seemed to be more refine.

There is still a few isue such as Konqueror crash after a theme change apply, logout & log back in seemed to cure it. And, the Anandtech forums search/reply/etc... buttons doesn't display at all in Konqueror, but work perfectly under Mozilla/Galeon. (However, I much prefer the layout of Konqueror over that of the ugly & poor configuration choices of Mozilla/Galeon).

Some hardcore Linux users may not like the new Mandrake look, because it mimic Windows. But, this feature in my book is a positive move to get more desktop user on to Linux. Linux community is taking a chapter out of MS book and apply on the Linux path (one of the main feature that contribute to MS sucess is how Windows mimicking look/feel of the Mac).

This mark another step closer for Linux as an acceptable alternate to M$ domination.

Downloding now.. im have it going while i sleep. Guess i put it on my 6gb hdd no dual boot. I hate dual booting b/x most likly i want never use linux.

So far Mandrake 9.1rc2 is the nices Linux desktop that I have install & played with.

At the moment I'm curious as of how nice Lycoris built 69 is compare to Yoper, ELX, Red Hat & Mandrake. I downloaded a copy of Lycoris built 69 & tried to install it on my puter, but it refuses to detech the ide or scsi device.

I have been giving Mandrake 9.1 rc1 a try and so far the only problem I see is with rpmdrake (GUI tool for installing /uninstalling packages) It is *not exactly* working properly...

Looks a lot cleaner 😉 Guess I'll just wait for 9.1 Final which should be anytime soon 😉
