mandrake 9.1 booting problem

Last night I installed mandrake 9.1 on my old p3-500. It boots up alright up until the time it checks for new hardware, at this point it goes into a cold freeze. There is no hard drive activity at this point.

Anyone have any ideas what might be happening?

There's a million possibilities. Where exactly does it freeze? Try to get some error messages. Verbatim, if at all possible.

The problem is, it is not showing any error messages. It freezes occasionally during installation just after i am asked to search the internet for updates. It freezes again while booting when it says "Checking for new hardware".
