Mandrake 8.2 on Dell Inspiron 8100--Need Help

At the very end of the installation, when I configure X windows, and try to test, the screen goes black and I have to power it down. I have a UXGA screen, so for monitor type I chose "Dell laptop 1600" as 1600x1200 is the native resolution. For display adapter I have the Radeon Mobility 7500 (64mb) Only option I have it ATI Radeon. I chose the resolution of 1600 x 1200 and 32 bit color. I tried XFree86 4.2.2 (with 3D acceleration) as well as without.

Any suggestions?

I tried FreeBDS and the same thing happens and now I am installing Slackware 8.0...keeping my fingers crossed that I can get it configured....

I am thinking it is the video card driver giving me the problems. I tried several different monitor/resolution/color depth combinations and every time just a blank screen. I just hope I can get any distro of linux to work...

Any particular log I should check?

Thanks for replying.

There should be an XF86 log somewhere on the system (either in ~/ or /var/log).

still no go....looking for the log file and cant find it.... then i ran a 'find -name XF68 log' but nothing still

ok, found the log file...now how do I get it from my laptop (w/ out web access) to my desktop?

at the very end of the log it says:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

any ideas?

Run through the X configuration (xf86cfg or xf86config -my capitalization thingies may be wrong, check /usr/X11R6/bin).

I will take a look at those files to see if anything looks incorrect.

BTW how can I copy a file onto a floppy disk?

I ran the xf86cfg and some lines at the bottom are:

(WW) ATI: PCI?AGP Mach 64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected!

Fata server error

I have tried google'ing for problem with this card and linux but came up empty....

thanks again, for replying.

I tried looking on a web site called Linux on Laptops which had a list of companies and the laptop models. A lot of people had Inspiron 8100s, but no one had the Radeon Mobility 7500 in them. Just the GeForce2Go. You may want to check that site (if you haven't visited already) periodically to see if someone else has some success with it.
