Mandrake 8.1 Modem

I am just trying to find a cheap 56k modem that will work under
Mandrake 8.1 and future releases that doesn't require a huge effort
to get running and working. Any Ideas?

Thanks All
Shuten

I've been using a USR-5610 Internal PCI one.

It works with newer kernals (2.2 and up I think). With Mandrake 8.1 it did require some modifications (I had to add a setserial command in my lilo), but that's how linux works, you modify/tweak things a lot.

Does anyone know a site where they will give you compaitble modems and
how to configure them to work under linux, in this case mandrake 8.1?
I am hoping to find a PCI modem but if the easiest way is to go with an
external modem then I will work with that as well. The Cheaper the better.

Thanks for the help so far.

Thats been the problem thus far. Even though a PCI modem is hardware based
doesnt mean it is compatible. Is there a definitive guide out there that states
which will definetely work? I've been trying to find one but cant seem to get one that
is good. Thanks for everyones help.

Is there a decent external modem that is decently priced out there?

All hardware modems made for your architecture (x86) should be compatible. Just because you dont know the init strings or whatever doesnt mean the modem is not compatible. Get a hardware modem and learn how to use it, but definitely ignore the advice already given to you.

External? First of all...Stay AWAY from USB... they are often propetary and are windows only due to their drivers...make sure its SERIAL RS232 connected.

Try these pricewatch searches:

Pricewatch: modem linux

pricewatch: modem external

These might be a good choice for an external that popped up on the pricewatch search:

zoom external 56k modem $24.95
Diamond SupraExpress 56k External, Serial $24.00
