Mandatory Roaming Profiles

I am trying to use poledit to create a mandatory roaming profile policy.

The workstations are Windows 98 and the PDC is NT 4. There is also an NT 4 BDC.

Ultimately what I would like to do is restrict the users from changing colors, screen savers, wall paper and the such to make all desktops look identical no matter who logs in and what computer they are logging in on.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Thanks in advance. 😕

NT 4 policies are a real pain in the ass. I've tried to work with them to do this, but I finall gave up. Everything that can be restricted in policies can be set in the registry. I just tweaked the registry and put the "unlock.reg" file in a password-protected zip file. When I needed in, I just unzipped the file, unlocked and unlocked the registry. When I was done, I just locked it back up with a lock.reg file that had all the customizations.

That's the poor man's way of doing it. There's lots of "PC Lockdown" apps that function much better than trying to use Win9X policies.

If you really want to lock down the users, I would recommend a program that I use at work. Deep Freeze is a program that will "freeze" all the drives on the computer, not allowing changes. What it will do is allow the user to make any changes that they want, but as soon as the computer reboots, everything is back to the original configuration. This is a great program for the school network I run. It may be easier for you to do this, if you are a business. If you are a home user, then I would just keep trying the system policies. I can't help you on this, as we run Novell Netware on our network.
