Why 33in. for men and 35in. for women? And why an arbitrary waist measurement? No way a 6-5" guy should have the same waist as a 5-6" guy:confused:

I've never been to Japan...so this is purely speculation...but I'm guessing their bell curve for height is a lot more compressed than ours.

We have a standard deviation of around 3". I'm still trying to find the SD for the typical Japanese male. But I'm guessing that it's much lower than 3".

According to wiki, avg male height in Japan is 5'7", and I can vouch for that after having lived there. Actually, I was in Okinawa, and the people are even smaller there overall (native Okinawans especially, the transplanted mainlanders are taller).

The Okinawans have a higher incidence of obesity as well, just to compound their problem, because the island was under US control until 1972, and fast food establishments and American food established themselves there earlier (A&W is quite common and very popular on Okinawa). The famous "Okinawa diet" which caused the locals to live longer than the mainlanders has become much more scarce, and the Okinawans lost their longevity title to the mainland several years ago.

I miss the food, the scuba, and seeing all those gorgeous women, not necessarily in that order. :)

so there goes the sumo sport?

Interesting point.

On the other hand, Sumo Wrestlers are probably a lot healthier than normal people. They have be fat, but its the type of fat that is easily burned off. They are incredibly fit and work out an amazing amount. I visited one of their workout areas, and they just workout non stop. Hundreds of Squats, benching crazy amounts, and other things.

Its like an Olympics training regiment.

yup tax the fat
its only fair
esp with universal healthcare.

tax smokers
tax drinkers
tax those that have sex with multiple partners
tax those that dive fast cars
tax those that own dirt bikes or go skydiving on a weekend
tax those that go camping in a wilderness
tax those that live in area with high crime rate
tax anyone (fat or not) that eats fast food
etc

all of those people contribute to higher health care costs. I swear, some of you won't be happy until everyone and everything is 100% taxed.

i dont care about the tax I just would prefer not seeing fatties everywhere I look.

I hate the video news links these days. Much prefer to read an article.
But its what all the hip, cool kids are doing these days, with their Youtubes and Mybooks, or Facebooks, or whatever they are!

I love their choice of pictures.

All articles about fat people need pictures of fat people, because no one has the slightest clue what they look like.
And here, since this is about Japan, we feature pictures of fat Japanese people, for those who would have no clue as to what they'd look like.

I'm impressed. I'd like to see that kind of treatment here. The obese Americans are bringing with them Diabetes and Heart Disease. Both of those aren't cheap on the healthcare systems. I wouldn't be surprised if we see that policy enforced by group insurance coverage in the next 10 years here.

If we ever get national socialized medical care, enforced exercise program will soon follow, à la 1984.

Every other developed country with socialized healthcare disagrees with you.

They're doing it in Japan now. Give it time; it will spread to other countries.

Why not just tax the doctors and hospitals and take back all the money they are sucking out of the economy?

Yikes, health care is going down fast enough as it is, you want to make it worse?

"This roll of toilet paper that cost you $10, now cost $100 to cover our taxes..." Because, guess what, the patients will be footing the bill on this one.

It was almost a haiku... I had to count syllables. It would've been highly appropriate if it were.
