I work at the front desk in a Hilton hotel. Although many guests pay with credit cards we are all asigned a bank with $300. Theres 3 computers in the front desk and 3 drawers under them, thats where each of our banks go. We'll the other day I was missing $100 from my bank, which i understand its my reponsibility. Now i've never been missing more then $1 since i started working there 2 1/2 years ago. So i looked closely at my money and something seemed strange, then my supervisor told me that he used my bank to get change from. Heres the thing, i never authorized him to exachange any money of his from my bank, and we don't have locks in our drawers so its not like its my fault for not locking it. I don't think this is fair. What do you guys think i should do about it?

If you need the job, suck it up and pay, and start looking for another job.

Otherwise, stand firm and see how it turns out.

Post your story on at least 4 more forums and talk to everyone you know. Then come to the conclusion that the only person that can answer this question for you is yourself.

So let me get this straight, Hiltons don't lock the money drawer and there are 3 of them each holding $300 in cash.

I'll be right back.

The supervisor admited on using my bank to get change for himself. At the end of the day when i counted my bank i realized that i was missing $100

The supervisor admited on taking change from my bank, not taking 100 dollers. At the end of the day when i counted my bank i realized that i was missing 100

you probably have cameras and check to see them, who else would have access to your bank

Unless it's specifically outlined in whatever terms of agreement you came to when you took your job, you're not liable. Plus the fact that your supervisor went into your drawer on the only day where you were this much short basically guarantees that you won't have to pay. If the manager makes a stink, just take it to HR. That's what they're there for.

Correct.

Why would you say this? I know that all my co workers that have been missing money from their bank had to pay off their pockets. I think they might have made us sign papers saying we are liable for money missing from our banks when we first started working here.

Probably true, but if your supervisor used your station then at a minimum you are equally liable.

It's also possible that your supervisor is stealing money using this trick and that it was not a mistake.

You should definitely contact HR and/or your supervisor's supervisor.

I'm afraid they'll take it out my next paycheck... I was thinking about talking to the general manager about this, but i guess i'll try HR first.

tell them you're not paying and to file a police report b/c you didnt take it.

But they could fire you over it, so you need to decide what you want. to be fired or keep your job

they cant take it out of your paycheck without your permission, nor can they hold your check till you pay. its against the law.

Another thing I want to add is that I will be giving my two weeks notice by this friday because i got another job offer in accounting in a better hotel. However, I'm afraid to tell them before i resolve this because they might just go ahead and make me pay since they know i'll be leaving soon.

As far as I know they cannot take money from your check without your ok. So tell them you did not take the money, other people had access to the cash, and ask to see the video tapes as I am sure there are cameras at your front desk like most.

But put your notice in now. If they give you a hard time file a complaint of hostile work enviroment with HR.

awesome responce. any reason why he could tell them this without being fired on the spot????

Talk to HR and explain to them the situation. Listen to the guy who is an investigator for this situation. At MOST you are 1/2 liable for this since your manager admited to using the drawer as well.

You're right. However, it may be in their policies that employees are responsible for their bank at all times and have to pay back missing funds (or something to that effect).

In essence, in the end, you may still be responsible for the money, but they can't just take it out of your check unless you authorize it. They can probably discipline you though (including termination) and send you to collections if you don't pay.

Really, it all depends on what company policy states, hence...go talk to HR!
