Managing/Allocating Bandwidth

So here's the situation. I've moved into my girlfriends place for the summer, and I am suffering a bit in the online gaming/downloads department. When all of her roommates are home my ping is unbearable.

They have ATT U-verse DSL and are running a 2WIRE modem setup. I checked the administration (192.168.1.254) page and there doesnt appear to be any QoS settings for the 2WIRE. I was looking for any software or tips that could help me allocate myself more bandwidth when I am gaming - I dont think their facebook and youtubing will suffer too much. I googled around and ran into a few dead ends but I was hoping one of you would have some insight.

Cheers

You're not really going to be able to do anything. A different router might be able to prioritize certain bandwidth in the outbound direction, but the inbound bandwidth is uncontrollable.

Your best bet would be to ask them if you can reduce the speeds of their torrents, if they run them. But if it's just legitimate traffic, there isn't much you can do except pay for more bandwidth if it's available...and even that might not help very much.

You paying for the internet? If so, tell them to back the hell off stop all the downloadin'. If not, shut up and be happy someone else fronts the bill for you.

Invest in a router that can do QoS, that is the ticket. Basically is able to prioritize traffic on certain ports (its often used for VoIP)
