I don't think i've ever heard of ANYONE getting a drug test up here.
Does Home Depot do drug tests on potential employees in Canada? Their signs clearly state that they do here in the U.S.

Quebec separatistes are some of the most misguided people in the world - in no way "half our citizens". To use a dangerous analogy, the people who believe in separatism are like the Taliban - they grew up hating a fabled English Canada and having it reinforced in their immediate culture so much that they can't see how pointless that dream of theirs is. It only continues because it means continuous political concessions to them.

Jeez don't take even light criticism well do you? Though with the number of straight out American-bashing thread this forum has seen I guess I can understand the reaction.

Go ask any truck driver about drug testing. You are misinformed!

I also don't personally know anyone that drives a truck! 😀

You know, that's the damned weirdest and most beautiful thing. You guys came here from every corner of the world, but you all have the same spirit and innate pride in your country that I've never seen anywhere else. It's really touching. You have no idea how jealous many of us up here are of that.

...or maybe I just need to travel more! 😱

I like Canada. My cousins live in Canada so I visit Toronto every year or so. The town my cousins lived in, North Markham I think, is rather nice. There are lots of trees and houses aren't within 5 feet of each other. The schools aren't underfunded either. They follow the metric system!! That's very nice.

Doesn't it seem odd, though, that as screwed up as we appear to be to the rest of the world we always get the job done that noone else will even try? That is the beauty of being an American. We don't have to care about what anyone else thinks of us. We are number one and we don't have any plans to let that change.

Fact to ponder: Who finally built the Panama Canal?
Been looking at Cold War propoganda?

Been looking at Cold War propoganda?
Yes, because everything good about the US must be nothing more than propaganda put out during the cold war.

One of these days when you are out of college you'll start to realize that America is far from the horrible place you perceive it as, and you'll also see that the grass isn't really quite so green on the other side.

Actually, the violence thing...I can't recall the last game that was pulled from shelves. Maybe Primal Rage for Genesis? Sometimes Wal-Mart or Target won't carry it but there's 1249813480 other stores that will.

Yeah..
It's not meant to be a particularly intelligent thread. There are threads that deal with each of these subjects specifically for that.

So everything that you should be 'allowed' to do has to be spelled out in the Constitution? Um, the country doesn't OWN you. I'm talking about national cultures on each point. To get more specific...

1) Drug tests. America is right up there as one of the most socially progressive nations in the world when it comes to freedoms - certainly, nobody defends them with American vigour. So why so much care about what people do in their spare time? Base employee performance on PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS. For example, who cares if a guy's blood alcohol level is 110% over legal if the day he clocks into work he's as stone cold sober and efficient at his job as they come?

2) The United States arguably houses the most powerful scientific minds in the world. At the same time, a damned good portion of your population believe the Earth is only ~6000 years old. Not that I'm calling those people idiots or anything, you can believe whatever the hell you want to. But you have to admit that's one hell of a contradiction...assuming I guess that you believe science contradicts Creationism?

3) Societal pressures forced Walmart to pull games like Hitman 2 from the shelves just a week or so ago, didn't they? But you could still buy your rifles over the counter. Again, heck of a contradiction.

4) It's called a freaking joke...

america is the land of extremes, we have scads of brilliant people. the only problem is we have lots of stupid people too😛 not to mention scads of religious fundies, the christian coalition anyone? 😛

yes drug tests are stupid, and so is our policy, but you gotta be tough on drugs!! else ur political opponent will eat you alive.

religious nuts love trying to push god and the commandments into goverment, its quite amazing really.

the nutz ranting about video games are hilarious ..well they would be if they weren't so powerful. violent video games in canada and most other countries havn't led to violence😛

the one good point hammered in bowling for columbine, we blame video games, music, lack of prayer, lack of religion, high immigration, etc for americas violence, scads of guns(canada has a lot)yet those factors don't affect other countries😛 something else is wrong. our murder rate is disproportionately high.

btw we do have bagged milk in schools.
i have never tried it.

critical thought is a bit absent sometimes😛 look to the evolution/creation threads for illogic.

I don't recall anyone proving evolution to be true so that kills number two. While people may think Creationists are stupid, they choose to believe a theory much like evolutionists choose to follow a theory.

Sure Walmart pulled the game Hitman2. There wasn't any societal pressure to do that though. Walmart maintains an image as a clean family place and that is why they sell edited games and card for R-rated movies and mature games.

Bagged milk can be a mess! How do you keep it from getting a hole in it or how can it be easy to store? 🙂😉🙁😱

I've taken a few drug tests and... Well, I don't feel strongly about it one way or another. I don't feel that my rights/freedom are being stepped on, but I guess I can see why some people don't like it too much... My old boss was awesome. He would bring us his homebrew beers. 😀

The earth thing is a contradiction only if the scientific minds you speak of thought the earth is only 6000 years old 😀 😛 But they're separate peeps 😉

Well i spent about 3 months in Canada on business and I can quite easily say I am glad I do not live there.
It is a nice place visit, but not somewhere I would care to live.

For every crowded city you can name I guarantee that I can name at least two other places that are, in fact, idyllic places to live. Your choice to see only the poorer places is every bit as bad as the choice that some people make to see only the better places. Comparing the worst places in America with some ideal is an incredibly stupid instance of what statisticians call "data snooping", which is the comparison of the worst aspects of one thing with the best aspects of another.

While people may think Creationists are stupid, they choose to believe a theory much like evolutionists choose to follow a theory.
In strict scientific terminology, evolution is a theory, but creationism is nothing more than a hypothesis. A theory, in science, requires a degree of data to support it. Atomic weaponry works, but the what makes it work is still scientifically called a "theory". Creationism, in the pure scientific sense, can only be considered a hypothesis. This is not to say that creationism is impossible, it's just to point out that the scientific definition of "theory" is far more strict than the more common everyday definition.

Two websites I want to quote here.

A clear distinction needs to be made between facts (things which can be repetively observed and/or measured) and theories (explanations which correlate and interpret the facts).

The statement that evolution is "a theory, not a fact" is based on the belief that a theory is something that can not be proven, and therefore is not a "fact." This view grossly distorts the meanings of the words "theory" and "fact," and diverts attention from the large amount of factual evidence supporting evolution. In addition, it fails to make a clear distinction between theory and fact.

Before a theory is given any credence in the scientific community, it must be subjected to "peer review." This means that the proposed theory must be published in a legitimate scientific journal in order to provide the opportunity for other scientists to evaluate the relevant factual information and attempt to duplicate any experimental procedures involved. Creationists did not take the lack of peer review into account in their criticism of "cold fusion" and the National Geographic "bird/reptile" fossil, both of which were rejected upon peer review.

-- Frank Steiger

In the American vernacular, "theory" often means "imperfect fact" - part of a hierarchy of confidence running downhill from fact to theory to hypothesis to guess. Thus the power of the creationist argument: evolution is "only" a theory and intense debate now rages about many aspects of the theory. If evolution is worse than a fact, and scientists can't even make up their minds about the theory, then what confidence can we have in it? Indeed, President Reagan echoed this argument before an evangelical group in Dallas when he said (in what I devoutly hope was campaign rhetoric): "Well, it is a theory. It is a scientific theory only, and it has in recent years been challenged in the world of science - that is, not believed in the scientific community to be as infallible as it once was."

Well evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape-like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered.

-- Evolution is a Fact and a Theory

In summation, Creationism is not a scientific theory - the word theory is itself badly maligned in our normal usage. Though you could always argue on the aspect of bias in the peer review of all things related to God.
As for number one, I am all for drug test considering that is a right that businesses choose to take and the government requires it for certain jobs. Also I doubt anyone comes to work drunk and it isn't noted or grounds for termination.
Absolutely, private business have every right to discriminate along ethnic lines if they so wish. The right to do so is clearly there; that's not what I'm addressing. I should clarify my previous example better, though:

Jack the computer programmer comes to work, and surprise surprise he will be randomly drug tested today. His pee indicates that he has smoked marijuana in the previous week. Now, Jack is a model employee and a critically valued member of the programming staff. Never been late to work, always superby efficient, gets along with everyone just fine. But the company has arbitrarily made a rule that anyone caught with bad pee is immediately terminated, so Jack is given his walking papers on the spot (let's assume the test is 100% accurate or that Jack has admitted to actually smoking marijuana). Now if on work hours he's the perfect employee why bother testing for drugs? Why not just terminate based on whether he works well or not? Performance evaluations!
Sure Walmart pulled the game Hitman2. There wasn't any societal pressure to do that though. Walmart maintains an image as a clean family place and that is why they sell edited games and card for R-rated movies and mature games.
I will concede on this point considering I am making this point based on third-party sources and do not actually live in the country to be able to observe and back up such claims.
Bagged milk can be a mess! How do you keep it from getting a hole in it or how can it be easy to store? 🙂😉🙁😱
You buy 4 bags or so at a time, and buy a permanent plastic jug/container to put the bags in as you go through them one by one. Just snip the top and you're ready to go. When the bag is empty, crumple it up and throw it away - next bag! It's actually very hard to spill milk out of the bag. 😀

😱

You should see some of the WWII propaganda ads I've seen in history books. The tall, proud, imperial-looking Lion of England with a regal determined look on its face. To his side and a bit behind...a beaver half its height with a Maple Leaf hat on its head representing Canada. Uhh...that's supposed to be inspirational? It's laughable! 😀

Edit: Not to disparage any of our vets or anything! We did plenty in each WW.

Yllus- The only thing I remember about England was seeing the Queen at some funeral and the plane flight back where me and my four bothers sung "GOD BLESS AMERICA" in harmony. The brits on board did'nt like it much.

Bagged milk? Does it look like a cow's udder? Bagged milk. Isn't that what people did BEFORE they discovered plastic? Also, doesn't that puncture more easily?

Ok, so you've got us on the other stuff. But at least we don't have a 14% sales tax. Nor do we try to sell fish and chip EVERYWHERE.

I don't know anything about canadian history. But out of curiosity, did the canadians rape, pillage, and plunder the indian's land like the americans did? Or did indians even want to live in canada?

Ok ok, all this canada/usa bashing has to stop. Canadians, just adopt our currency and start calling yourselves americans! :Q
