Interesting. I am thinking about getting a new SSD for about $100 for my 4 years old Dell Studio and upgrade it. I will mark this thread and come back later if I need help.

I assume these are old corporate laptops (ie. the kind that a company like accenture hands out to their consultants in mass) so they have probably been beat up on pretty good. Still, $150-$200 for a laptop to give to the kids to pound on seems like a great deal. Wouldn't use them for any productive work though.

you need a dell win7/8/10 disc for auto activation?

i used a digital river win7 on a e6420 (2nd gen i5) and had to put in the key (at least they try to protect it by putting it in the battery compartment)

I bought it knowing this. I used the key from my old laptop (was destroyed shortly afterwards).

I switched to SSD on an older laptop as well as this laptop. Depending on the size $100.00 is too much. You can pick up a 120 gig SSD for 60 bucks. You want to look for SATA III 6gbps. At that point there is little difference. SSDs also have firmware that you should update. I've had issues with Windows 10 hard locking on a SSD, I updated the firmware and it never happened again.

The case/screen/keyboard is in great condition. Usually you will see the keys on the keyboard go shinny, but this is not the case here.
