Doctors don't really seem to know much about what causes migraines, which is why you are where you are. There are treatments that work for some types, but overall, they're still largely a mystery.

Actually, the brain as a whole is still a mystery. At least it seems as if your doctor wants to help, which still says something.

... uh... except for the studies done suggesting that many migraine are caused because of tension on the dura from the muscular connection between the dura and c1-c2 via the rectus capitis posticus minor....

seriously, go to a chiropractor... quit throwing your money away.

Like I said, there are types of migraines about which doctors know a bit and have cures. There are also types about which no one has a clue. If you're going to tell me that anyone--whether he be an MD, a chiropractor, an accupuncturist, or whoever--can cure any migraine, I'm calling BS.

i'm not going to tell you that... but i am going to tell you that if he goes to a chiropractor, he's got a better chance of having his migraines go away than if he want through a barrage of lab tests for a neurologist who has no idea. a neurologist isn't going to be able to adjust a neck and relieve the muscular contractions causing his migraine.

and don't throw the word "cure" around so much... no one really CURES anything. your body is mainly the only thing that can cure anything... just like it was made through millions of years of evolution to do, via the nerve pathway. lots of times, our bodies need outside influences to help cure things, like antibiotics and certain removals of things, but otherwise, and most importantly, it's our bodies that do the job.

contrary to what you may have heard, whether it be from joe schmoe or a doctor of chiropractic or a medical doctor or whatever, chiropractors can't cure a damn thing, nor should they claim to... if any chiropractor tells you he can cure something, laugh in his face and tell him to retire before he hurts someone.

I recently heard on the radio, that some migraines can be caused by a problem with the heart.

When we are born we all have holes in our hearts, for most people, it closes itslef completely but in some cases, that hole does not close all the way and it has been learned that this issue has been tied to severe headaches.

In test subjest where this abnomality was found, when surgery was done to close the hole, the headaches stopped.

I don't know what you have and have not discussed with your doctor, but this is something to look into if you have not already.

Also, have you tried alternative medicine such as acupuncture or chiropractic care?

This abnormality is a a VSD or Ventricular Septal Defect. There are also ASD's which are Atrial Septal Defects. They are rather easy to find especially in babies who have larger defects. Got any links to research papers or journals discussing this? I am interested.

not usre how old this is,
about.com

I am finding many articles about it, but many are from 2005 and some are from even 2003, I just heard about it the other day and thought maybe it was a new thing, but apparently not.

Wife works and makes a whopping $5.60 an hour
Were still on welfair in its justation period and thats the insurance were on. I cant just go switching docs or get a second opinion at the drop of a hat (BTW the neurologist was my second opinion.
You see how much my wife makes so seeing a massage therapist or get needles stuck to me is out of the question.
I dont think my eating habbits are causing this for one I barley eat and if I do it its like a salad or something and not much of it. I have finnaly gotten my diabeties under controll for I am trying like hell to lose weight so how.

I walked in to the doctors office without a headach and he starts drilling me on how they start what I do to get them started. I told him it doesnt matter I dont have to do anything special to get it going. I said I dont have one now. % min later I had a full blown one looked at him and said well I got one no, no warning, didnt do anything but sit here talking to you and now I have one. He broght up accidents like car, knife, fight, and so on. I mentioned my back injury to him but it didnt seem to faze him at all and I guess I can rule out that as the cause of my migrane.

Few years ago I would get one in the same spot maybe 1 or 2 every 6 months or so. Then it was 1 or 2 a month, then we moved down here and I got them 1-2 times a day and started seeing the doctors here on it. I have had about 6-8 different kinds of meds that do nothing and I have even went in for a shot with 3 drugs mixed in it that knocked me flat on my ass 2 hours later but I was passed out still in pain. and woke up in pain still. Now my headachs last for days on end with a hour or 2 of letting up and there have been a few days here where I actually got a day or two without major pain or one at all. But no matter what it always comes back and lasts day, were talking weeks on end and I can pop my pills like they were candy and it doesnt do anything to lessen the pain or make it go away.

Sounds like I wont be worrying to much when Im on the Elavil though from the 2 replies. Guess I will be way to high to care about my pain on that stuff. Im to get the EEG done on the 27th, Im guessing for the slow to no resonses from his little hammer hitting me and the shakes. I read up on it and it says it checks for brand pattern abnormities. Its weird about the shakes because when I lay down to go to sleep they slow down and go away till a couple hours after i wake up and then put a quarter in me for im done.

Oh what to give to be able to pop a Excedrin and make it all go away. I just got used to dealing with my back pain on a daily bassis without the need for drugs and the combination of my back and head are really taking a toll on me mentally.

The reported link is primarily between PFO (patent foramen ovale) and migraines - not VSDs or ASDs per se - mainly because ASD and VSD tend to get noticed because they cause symptoms or can be detected on listening to the heart - and because PFO is very much more common than a true defect.

The foramen ovale is a hole between the left and right halves of the heart, which is open in the womb, and closes after birth (occasionally it doesn't fully close, and a small passage for blood is left). A VSD or ASD is where a part of the heart muscle seperating the 2 halves doesn't form.

The link is observational - in that when investigated people who get a lot of migraines are more likely to have a cardiac defect than people who don't get migraines.

What isn't known is whether the cardiac defect causes the migraines, or whether the correlation is just random chance. There are hypotheses that could explain why a cardiac defect might cause migraine.

Similarly, although some centers offer repair of the cardiac defect, and some studies have suggested a benefit - no properly controlled trials have been performed.
