Man with ALS wants to donate before he dies.

Guy wants to give up his body parts before they deteriorate and are useless for donation at his natural death. +1 to him. ALS is a nasty way to go. Think I'd go for this if I were in his shoes.

Phebus says once he realized he was going downhill, he researched organ donation and learned people often face long waits. He says he wants to give up his organs — his heart, lungs and liver — now, before they deteriorate.

in other words he wants to commit suicide...🙄

So?

If I had some crippling disease like ALS, I'd want to end things on my terms and not suffer through till I die 'naturally'.

We allow our pets to be euthanized; we should allow individuals with end of life conditions to choose the same if they desire.

props. too bad the country is full of self-righteous asswipes that think they should be able to tell people what they can and can't do with their bodies

People who want to commit suicide are just thinking of themselves.

Not necessarily. If someone was to find out they had cancer and only 6 months to live, or they could spend their life saving leaving their family with nothing but extending their life 2 years. suicide seems like the more logical and selfless option.

Just don't have any treatment, save the $$ for the fam.

No, because with cancer you hold out hope with treatment that you can extend your life. And since insurance paid for my father's cancer treatment he didn't leave us with "nothing" financially, if that is what you meant.

So, I won't say ALS and cancer are in the same boat. Also, I don't believe a cancer victim's organs would be well enough to donate being they could be infected with cancer cells unlike ALS which doesn't affect the organs.

I agree with others in this thread. If you had ALS, you'd probably want to commit suicide too. In this case, you can't argue that it's the selfish way out because he wants to do it in order to commit an unselfish noble act.

Too bad by the time they finish the debate whether or not he can do it the parts will probably not be good anymore.

Article was light on details of his present condition, but I'm guessing he must already be severely disabled? Otherwise what's stopping him from checking the "donate" box on his ID and taking care of it himself?

If memory serves me correctly, you can't actually be dead when they consider you for donation. You basically need to be a vegetable on life support in the hospital.

He could just aim a little more to the side then.
