Because IMO most people do not know that this common hand single for the number 3 is used by some racists. And even among those who do know about it, since the symbol clearly has a more common meaning, it appears that some people are saying it's racist because other people are saying it's racist. It's a herd mentality.

Before you reply that I am speculating, I will point out that this is consistent with manufactured outrage over many things. You really think people were terribly upset over a white person owning a taqueria until people started jawing about what they call "cultural appropriation"? They sure as hell were not because no one ever said anything about that sort of thing until about 10 years ago. NOW it's an outrage. Wholly manufactured, like so many things with the "woke" left.

The only reason I personally knew about that particular symbol is because last year several media outlets ran stories educating people about various white supremacist symbols. The "OK" sign as well.

Pretty soon we're going to have to outlaw nodding our heads as affirmation, because some racist dickweed decides to make the nod a secret handshake and posts about it on social media.

White supremacists should not be given that kind of power. Unless or until it has become a commonly known standard, like a swastika, confederate flag or seig heil salute, just ignore them. Three fingers means "three."

These are just some of the incidents that got national coverage. I seem to also remember a headline about a Trump intern or something in a WH photo, but these examples should be enough.

The history of the symbol is quite stupid, honestly. 4chan trolled the world by claiming it was a white power symbol when it wasn't, but actual white supremacists fell for the troll and actually started using it. It is every bit as well known as pepe by now and using pepe here will earn an infraction IIRC. Some people are going to be offended when they see it, that's just the way the world works now.

I'm not saying it's ideal but it's also not right to dictate what other people should or should not be offended by. You are not going to convince anyone that the Roger Stone pic in the link above was just harmless fun. The symbol has been adopted by well-known white supremacist public figures. At the same time, I acknowledge that the herd needs to cut people some slack and stop jumping to conclusions. There needs to be some give and take on both sides.

As for cultural appropriation, I am not down with that shit. I can understand some of the outrage in maybe certain select situations, like an actual avowed white-supremacist rocking corn rows or somethin egregious like that, but the rest of it seems like bullshit.

The title of this thread doesn't represent the happenings re: this story. It should be changed. It somehow implies that people think he is racist because he won Jeopardy 3 times. I think Jennings won Jeopardy 74 times, is white and no-one thought he was racist.

While I get the point of this, I just want to note that this is far from ubiquitous, which I think is one of the problems that arise with stories like this. As the husband to someone with deaf parents, I quickly learned every time I was using the above hand gesture, I was indicating the number 6, not the number 3. The below is the sign for the number 3.




This actually came up over a year ago when the OK sign was considered racist. The problem is that the particular sign makes up the handshape for a number of words in multiple different sign languages across the world.

The point is, the already highly marginalized deaf communities are not going going to be changing dozens of their words to deal with the co-opting of that sign, and they're most certainly not going to feel sorry about it when they feel like an afterthought to anyone outside of their community already. This is my primary problem with giving in to whatever flavor of the day 4Chan has declared is dog whistling. The idea that an even more marginalized community that has had to claw and scratch any semblance of getting education and work, can suddenly have parts of their language be taken, and told it's now racist so change it is silly. And Sign Language groups are no stranger to racism. There are many signs in Sign Language that represent races and peoples that are completely stereotyped (Jewish, Chinese, German to name just a few), but those are being changed as the groups become more educated and connect with larger world communities (the internet has helped this immensely). But I don't see co-opted signs changing anytime soon.

As for blue shirts, I agree that wouldn't be justified, but the white power symbol is what it is now. It isn't as obscure as you are making it out to be. There have been several public incidents revolving around it over the past decade. Does everyone know about it? No. But it is well known enough by now that I can't fault people for being offended by it.

Not everyone with a pineapple on their clothes/car want random people to fuck their wives. Most probably have no idea it's an extremely common symbol for swingers, most probably just like it because it reminds them off a nice trip.

I'm sure it's the same thing with the Ok symbol, I'd be shocked if the majority of people have any idea it's been taken over by white supremacists, and a bet a big chunk of the ones that do, choose to not care that a handful of assholes are claiming a popular symbol.
