This is a true story that happened on Christmas Eve here in Bend, Oregon a couple of days ago (see http://www.bend.com/news/ar_view.php?ar_id=3547 and http://www.bendbulletin.com/news/story.cfm?story_no=5827 ).

Regardless, here's what happened. This guy, we'll call him Dumbass (as it's easier to remember than Thomas John Van Acker), was driving home at about 1 a.m. on Christmas Eve. He was out enjoying his weekend, and had gotten pretty shnockered. While he was driving home, he was well over the speed limit, and hit some ice (which is a pretty common site on the roads) and clobbered a power pole, knocking the thing over.

Well, Dumbass had no idea what was going on, or that he'd hit anything, so he kept driving and a block later hit another pole, knocking it over as well (and these are pretty thick wood poles, mind you), killing the power for about 2,500 folks in Bend for several hours.

So Dumbass drove away, and probably would've never been caught (as there was NOBODY out on the road where he was at, and only a few homes that were set off the road a bit -- basically, no witnesses). However, Dumbass called the police the next morning around 10 a.m. (after he'd slept it off a bit) reporting a "hit and run" -- that somebody had run into his car in the middle of the night. He had NO idea that he'd clobbered the power poles early that morning. The police show up, see that he had large fragments of the power poles sticking out of the front bumper of his car, and he was immediately arrested and faces charges that include drunken driving, three counts of failure to leave name and address at an accident scene, and two counts each of reckless driving and first-degree criminal mischief.

Man, what an flippin' idiot.....

EDIT: My buddy had just pointed out to me that he needed to die to be eligible for a Darwin award. I guess he's out on bail pending sentencing, so there's still a chance on New Years <hehe>

EDIT2 (1/4/02): I didn't think I'd be editing this post, but it happened again. Different guy, same situation, same street, though the suspect couldn't get his truck out so he fled on foot when the cops showed. He was quickly caught and will be paying for the damage. What's with people hitting poles on that street? That road gets enough traffic, plowing, and sanding that it should be in fine shape. Stupid drunks....

regardless, here's a link to what happened yesterday:

lol, that is funny, but according to both sites:

<< About a half hour later, Thomas John Van Acker, 24, of 1225 NW Newport Ave. called police with a report that his vehicle had been involved in a hit-and-run crash in front of his house, Bend police said.

An investigation into the hit and run revealed physical evidence that linked Van Acker's pickup to the sheared off power poles.

Van Acker was arrested on charges of drunken driving, hit and run, reckless driving, and criminal mischief.
>>

I doubt he forgot that he hit the poles. He was probably trying to get away w/ getting his truck fixed, but he obviously didn't want the insurance to know he was drunk and caused the damage himself . Anyway, he's still a jackass.

The article says "A Datsun Pickup" and that's all I know :)

The only reason I noticed it is because it killed the power at my in-law's house for a bit, and it closed the road to their house, adn I was wondering what was going on, and then looked into it and got those articles....still makes me laugh thinking about it.

Being a journalism guy myself, I know that's probably what the police told them on the record, but I'm sure I could ask that reporter who covered that story what the officer really said, and I'm sure that the officer just found power-pole fragments stuck to his car after his "investigation" (that probably lasted all of about 5 minutes).

<< my little infiniti would have been demolished after hitting one. >>

Yeah, my p.o.s. little Civic would've been totaled, too, and wouldn't have even have scratched the pole. Hell, my car probably wouldn't have made it up over the curb to hit the pole in the first place (it's a bit low to the ground, but not because I lowered it, but because it sucks <hehe>).

Now if I had my high school car (a 1978 Buick Century Station Wagon) I might have survivied, and maybe even have cracked the pole a tad.;)

If it was snowing and he knocked out my power, let me say that he wouldn't be a man (or perhaps alive) anymore.

Power poles are designed to snap off at the bottom in the event of a collision. This was done to minimize the damage done to cars (and their drivers) when a car runs into one.

well, it's funny he was caught for being a moron, but it just goes to show you how dangerous drunks are.

a stupid fool i worked with did something similar. he had a corvett (i have no idea how he paid for the thing since he only made about $10 an hour). one night he was hammered. he crashed the fool thing into the woods. the cops came but he ran on foot to call a friend. his friend took him home. a couple of hours later he called the cops at 2:30 am to report his car stolen. they came to his apartment. he answered the door with dried blood on his face. the cops took him to jail. dumb bastard. i am just glad he not only crashed his car, but that he got caught.

HAHAHAHA! If Bend got national headlines because of this, I would laugh my a$$ off...it's bad enough Oregon is already infamous for so much other crap (Tonya Harding, the dot-com town, the exploding whale...I could go on...:)).

When my brother was running for the cross-country team, he ran into a phone pole. Didn't damage the phone pole at all.
