I use to watch survivorman alot and enjoyed it. I thought Man vs Wild was sort of a wannbe cool knock off and avoided it. Recently was a marathon I watched and I really enjoyed it although my previous thought was sorta confirmed. Didnt really watch for the whole survivor aspect, more like "whats this crazy motherfvcker gonna do next?" Eat live snakes, bugs, kill rabbits with a stick (dam good throw btw... or so it seemed), pee on his head wrap to cool himself.... eew. He tried to tame a "wild" horse too... Sorry man I can't buy that. Anyone who has been around horses knows they aren't that tame and patient unless he found the 1 in a million coolest WILD horse EVAR (all by itself btw and they are pack animals).

The guy is impressive though in general. Mostly his climbing skills are impressive to me. I've been climbing (alot of free climbing included) for a while and I wouldn't even attempt half the stuff he does free climbing. I wonder how he eats and drinks what he does though without getting sick. Must have some aggressive antibiotic injections every 5 minutes...

Still, in the end survivorman is entirely different because this guy is on his own. Even if Bear Grylles or whatever his name has a crew which 100% does not interfere with his journey (which I doubt), the simple fact of having a safety net, insurance, is such a HUGE weight off truly surviving the wild. That mental aspect alone allows him to take much more risks then survivorman. In fact that's a big aspect Man vs Wild doesnt address very well at all. Half the stuff he does would need to be excersized with ALOT more caution or avoided all together if you knew that an injury or illness meant that they will have to identify you with dental records whenever they find your rotting corpse.

well on the other hand the burden of having to back track to set up your own cameras over and over takes away from what survivor man can do, probably eats up a significant portion of his time and concentration.. as for insurance policy, i'm sure survivorman also has a crew, they just keep their distance. if something did go wrong he would be alone for a while yes, but not forever before a crew got out to his general location.

uh, survivor man is the superior show. its more realistic... and les stroud actually carries his own camera and equipment around, and has to spend multiple days in the wild. produced and 90% finished by les stroud himself.

man vs wild is a guy who has a few concepts/tips of survival, and builds a show around that (applying the tips/tricks). if you read the show's credits, he actually employes a "survivor expert"!!!! ;rolleyes;
also, its been purported that the show is staged... in that theyre shots in vignettes instead of actually going through an entire trek. in some instances where he fashions a fishing hook, for example, in the next cut scene , after hes caught something, it can be seen that the hook actually used is store-bought.

the show is still cool, but survivorman is BOSS!

In Survivorman, the dude had to carry his own gear.

That said, the guys in both Survivorman and Man vs. Wild wouldn't last 3 episodes in survivor. They'd both either get voted out or say "Screw you guys, I'm going home" and hike off into the woods.

like many have said, survivorman is the real thing and man vs wild is over produced and much of it is faked.

the 2 bits where bear has to climb down a ravine, and a coconut tree. hes up there whining about how dangerous, exhausting, and difficult it is to scale. then he makes it way about 3/4rd to 1/2th down in a continuous shot... and then it cuts to him hopping onto ground from just the bottom.

come on, if he had actually did that bull, they wouldve spent the extra 60 seconds of tv time showing it.

I like it but it's too fake and melodramatic.
He has to jump off a 70 foot cliff into a river as the only way down while the camera crew films from upstream? Please.

I was a bit dubious of the Man vs Wild show. He seems to get himself wet often, sleep in cold damp clothes and not freeze to death (Sierra Mountains episode), then be dry in the morning. Drying clothes in the sun takes a long time.

I wish they would show more detailed plans of how he makes fire.

Some of the plant tips are great though. When in trouble eat pine needles as they hold moisture and vitamins.

That doesn't mean the show isn't good though, it definitely is.

Yea, that's my major beef with the show. He gets in some crazy situations, and I definately wouldn't want to be there (even with a camera crew), but it just takes something away from it all. If he gets hurt, there would be a chopper there within the hour to pick him up, and they would just finish shooting the show at a later date.

Having said that, drinking the water that you squeeze out of elephant crap is not something I would do... and that kind of stuff makes the show mildly entertaining.

i saw that, he was on the african savannah and needed water, so he scoops up a giant double handful of elephant dung and tilts his head back and squeezes the liquid from the dung straight into this mouth! :Q

everything he does that gets him wet gets bypassed through a cut scene where his clothes are instantly dry.

and everything he eats has "veeetamin C"

He'd probably do alot better if he didn't have to lug around a camera and batteries.
