Only mildly amusing.
And he was using a Mac, which probably means he knows nothing about computers. Thats why he couldnt fix it.

Try dealing with HP 1100 Business Ink jet printers if you want true ink jet comedy. When it comes to playing games with ink carts etc HP makes Epson look like amateurs.

my hp3210 does the same shit. all inkjet printers are a complete ripoff. the printer spent the last year printing out economy black and white, then it will outright refuse to let me print unless i replace the cyan cartridge. wtf? i barely print out one page a month, and everytime it prints it does some "device maintenance" which sounds like it's just wasting a crapload of ink. printers of all brands are a huge scam :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82XUuBIZsLw this is a good video

To play devil's advocate there is good reason to want the printer to stop printing if an ink cart is out but what they should do is provide a way to override that once you are made aware that a particular cart is out of ink.

There's only one problem: the guy in question was trying to print in black and white, and has been since the last couple of years.

What this means is that only the black should ever run out of ink. But the problem is that the manufacturers use a little bit of the other inks to get a much nicer black. They market this as a "better experience to the user.

This, though, is a scam, because thise makes sure that you're using the other colors, while you think you're not, and in the end they demand a replacement.

For the replacing the cartridges once removed: it's so that you can't use refilled cartridges. I have no idea how they are marketing these things though, and should be outright illegal.

I'm sure there's a way to overide these two things though.

that's the only reason why I keep it around.
Once the ink is used up, I'll throw it all out and go to newegg or amazon and get another for $40-50

There is a way too override on canon printers.....but the printer becomes a pain in the ass after that. I had a MP600...that was easy...just replace the chip, but sometimes the chip shits the bed after so many replacements (not to mention that it knows when the chip if reusued). I got a newer generation one....forget it. You take the cartidge out once and it starts yelling at you. Once time, I replaced the ink, it printed and the ink just went everywhere. I just dumped the printer (lost $150) and bought a laser (from Canon...hmmmm).

I've been using an HP laser printer for past 2 years, and haven't had one problem with the 3,000+ pages I've printed. The inkjet printers I had before, though? Don't get me started...

The HP 720c/722C....that was the last good printer they made. I still have it and just keeps going.

Heh. Ironically, epson does suck. But most printers will print fine if you select black&white only in the printer options, even without any ink in the color carts. That being said, it is an epson.

yeah the whole chipping of cartridges is a pain in the ass. At least that printer isn't like some that I have seen, lexmark, that have the black & white in the same cartridge as the color.

I have an HP 6122 with a duplexer and it's been great. It'll try to print a page with absolutely no ink in it at all, it lets me reseat ink cartridges, etc.

It's reasonably fast, it's got a duplexer attachment that is awesome (it prints a page, doesn't drop it, thinks for a second, then it sucks it in and turns it over to print the back).

It's also a tank, it's been working for years.

That beats the Epsons from around 1998 that had a built in print head and would clog when you looked at them wrong.

I had a 722C that I bought my Freshman year of college and used it flawlessly until the belt on it stripped recently :( Now I have a Photosmart C5280 It's nice but not quite the same thing...

epsons still clog when you look at them wrong. the epson rep to dell one day lied to me and said they don't use ink to clean the heads. oh? so why was i able to print all of 5 pages on a whole color cartridge, epson lady? i swore off their printers after that. i've got one sitting brand new in a box in my closet that was FAR. i tried selling it but no one wants it.

I'm using a HP LaserJet 1018. I can't compare it to the older models, but it was $120 at the time and I only had to replace toner once so far. Hopefully it will continue to work for many years.

I've been using this HP all in one photosmart 3210 for a couple years now. My experience:

When it runs out of a single color ink, it gives you the option to print in black and white.

Device maintanance when turned on(I swear I can hear my ink getting lower)

I just got a warning on the screen yesterday saying the full cartridges of ink in the printer are about to expire!!!! is it going to clog up the tubes like it's the internets? we'll see.

Ok, I guess I can't complain about the device maintanance.. there should be a legit reason for this.

The hp software for the printer.(sigh) when computer is shut down.. "hpsystray.shit is not responding.." I have to close like three of these on shutdown.

Color inkjet printers are horrible. Do not use one for your daily printing needs to save space, all the extra aggrivation and wasted time will make you wish you'd never been born. They're always out of ink since they have 12 ink carts that last for approximentally 7 pages each. Color lasers are expensive with expensive ink so no one buys them. Inkjet printers were invented by the devil as a way to sneak part of the torments of hellfire onto the Earthly plane.

Most people print like one color thing a year but print lots of black and white shit all the time. So what do they do? They buy the cheapest fucking inkjet printer available because "they need to print in color". It comes with enough ink to print half of a book report and the ink carts cost twice as much as the printer itself and need to be replaced 500 times per year for a low volume user.

Most people should actually either buy two printers, or just bring the one color thing they want printed this year to a print shop to do it. But the one printer they should have is a B&W laser printer.

I hear them now "But the laser printer cartridges cost $50! And my craptastic pissjet printer came free with my cordless phone battery!" Sure, the laser will cause a brownout when it fires up but the ink cartidge will probably outlast your marriage and you could take a dump in the paper tray and it'll probably print something on it. And they don't have computers in the ink cartridge with timebombs waiting to detonate after 2 successful page prints.
