Man urinates in resevoir. Now resevoir needs draining.

but for some reason a little urine freaks people out?

Sounded to me like it just freaked out the administrator, and he would rather waste ~$40k being lazy, not wanting to deal with possible complaints.

Hell, this wouldn't have even been a story had they not made the decision to drain it. Idiots.

Auto response:

Not everyone agrees with you, but I appreciate your opinion. Reasonable people differ and I think your position that this was a bad choice is reasonable as well. I am also confident that if I had taken an opposite course of action, many people would be reasonably upset that we didn't dump the water.

There was a known contaminant (as well as the unknown contaminants that were thrown into the reservoir as well) that was introduced into our drinking water yesterday. Knowing that some unknown substance was introduced into our drinking water made me much more cautious. We also have the luxury of having a lot of water available to us right now with full reservoirs and hundreds of millions of gallons going down the Bull Run River because we are full. Given that water is both cheap and abundant here in Portland, I think caution was the right move. Were we in a 100 year draught, I might make a different decision.

Bear Grylls laughs at Portland while he has another serving of his piss.

Water may be cheap and abundant, which is why we should bottle that shit and sell it to California or Arizona. Make use of the resources you have, Mr. Shaff, and bring more money into the state, rather than spending frivolously on something which cannot possibly cause harm.

I am a Portlander and I'd rather drink blue-green algae than another PDXer's piss. I'm glad they drained it.

response to that.

Dear idiot

while water may be abundant TAX money is not.

Kindly

Portland taxpayer

PFFFFFFFFFfffffffft... PDX doesn't spend our tax dollars wisely anyway, so what the hell does it matter?

I'd be really upset if I had to drink piss water while the city flushes money down the toilet in other ways.

Ever hear of Cryptosporidium, Shegilla or E. Coli? All are signs of some kind of fecal contamination.

Call your local health department / health district and ask for someone in disease surveillance. Ask them about how many cases they have of Cryptosporidium, Shegilla and E. Coli every year.

All the more reason to dump it and get fresh water.

are the fucking stupid? its a open body of water. how many animals have shit and peed in it? how many dead animals have they found?

so they are going to waste $30k to drain it over a little piss? something that is not going to effect the water at all?

And they said that open reservoir is literally the water you drink.
It was chlorinated and apparently completely treated before it entered that reservoir. So... all those birds and other animals that take a dip into the water, piss and shit into it, well... I guess they add flavor.

But human urine? OMG OMG bad! BAD!

I really hope that open reservoir doesn't go straight into the water supply from there. But, maybe this is a case of ignorance is bliss.
Even then, human urine is just fine, 99.9% of the time. I'd be more worried about geese shit and whatnot. That's how E. coli gets spread so often...

Or whatever that amoeba disease was carried in pigeon feces in the "Euphoria" House M.D. two-parter.

IIRC, in a healthy person, urine is sterile, and poses no threat whatsoever to the reservoir or the public.
