Man trade in values for Macs has dropped like a rock

A few months ago I did a quote from sellyourmac.com (no affiliation with them but have used them in the past) and it was $880 for my 2006 Mac Pro with 8GB RAM.

I was lazy and didn't bother doing it at the time and decided I was ready to do it now so reran the quote and it's now only $580 :(

I did email them and included my other quote from a few months ago but they said most they can do is $600.

Granted it's one of my Macs that's just sitting completely unused and not even hooked up in my office at home so at this point it's probably wiser to just sell it for any money but damn that stings.

If anyone else was thinking of selling their Macs to any of the many trade-in/buyback programs out there, don't drag your feet like I did.

Not surprising since a mac mini is probably faster at this point.

The new Mini's easily are and if you get the new Mini server that's quadcore, then that's a big hell yes.

I'm actually looking to sell my Pro to get a Mini server for that very reason.

Part that thing out on ebay, you can probably fetch almost that much for the case alone. People want G5 and Mac Pro cases to mod into hack (or not) cases all the time. There is a guy that modded a G5 case into a usable ATX case and he is selling it for $425.

Lion came out in the last few months making PPC completely worthless. someone i know got rid of a G5 a few weeks ago for a 27" iMac.

unless you do very specific work that requires Xeon's i'd just buy an iMac

I also got rid of a G5 for a 27" iMac and I can only sell the G5 for 140. :(

you buy macpros not only for cpu power but also for ram expansion and i/o options. I have a 2006 macpro. My cpu in protools never goes above 40% but I have 8tb raid drive plus 2 750gb internals for work drives plus the system drive plus a external fw800 2tb disk plus dual videocards for 4 displays plus pci-e protools hardware.

^ I cant do all of that with a mini.

That's a good point. I like where thunderbolt it going. It'll make a MBP or a Mini almost a replacement for a Mac Pro

Yeah, the best time to sell a used high dollar Mac is 2 months before the Apple Care warranty runs out, and before a new model is released (so maybe like 8-10 months after the last model).

I used to do this with my laptops and usually got good coin for them. Keep one for longer, esp. after a generation change in the CPUs, and it drops like a rock.

mini + thunderbolt + expansion chassis

thunderbolt is pci-e 4x slot MAX. My protools native card is pci-e 4x alone. Now tack on dual videocards running at 8 lanes each and raid card 1x and you are dead in the water. Not to mention the thermal characteristics of the btx case design ensure I can operate this machine nonstop.

I'm also looking at a blackmagic decklink pro card.

Point is there is a space in the market for a macpro.

I think between Hackintoshes and the Core i-series of CPU's, that's what's causing the drops. You can either roll your own or just get a Mac Mini and do 99% of what you want (or 100% with one of those PCIe Magma Thunderbolt enclosures!).

Pity. I always had great success with my Mac resale values.

The magma will be expensive

We have a magma pci to 4x pcie enclosure and it's around $2200

I would expect this product to be at least $1500

Oh hell no. Go look at the prices of their other products. Or let me say I wish it was this too. I would love to buy some expansion at that price.

But given the market maybe we will see prices on this type of thing drop. The market is opening up so maybe you will see $500 expansion chassis. I wouldn't expect magma to sit down there though. There stuff works like a wheel.

I wonder if someone else will pick it up. You can daisy chain so even if they sold it with one slot that still would be great. At a price of $150 :D
