man this is by far the worst tech support i have ever gotten

I just got a AverMedia ultraTV USB 300 as a present, but there is no sound coming through the input to the microphone when the program runs

the sound is there, because if i do a test using control panel on the port i can hear it.

i looked online and saw other people have had similar problems when their notebook doesnt have a "line in" just a "mic", so i call tech support and they tell me that I should be able to adjust microphone volume in the normal Volume Control in XP, i tell him mine doesnt have it listed as playback, just as recording.

well then he says to check his program for "Live feed" and i check and there is no microphone listed.

then comes his brilliant suggestion-
"I think you should read your manual and figure it out"

me-"I was like, read what?" (confused as the hardwares manual is a 1-page sheet)

him- "read your notebook manual and figure out how to use the microphone for our program."

me- "you want me to read my Dell manual?"

him- "yes you need to figure out how to use the microphone"

me- "but the microphone works i have used it"

him-"but you need to figure out how to get it to playback so our program can use it"

me- "thats why I called you"

him-" I dunno, read the manual"

this product might get returned

obviously that kind of tech support has no supervising for quality assurance... but at least you understood them.

So don't you have to go to 'open volume controls' and then 'properties', click 'recording' in the 'adjust for:' box, and then add microphone?

haha! I didn't even bother calling for support for my own generic TV tuner card - it's got a problem similar to yours. All these companies seem to do is slap their own name on a card cloned off someone else's technology.

I didn't even get a proper stamped CD with drivers with my card - it was a burned CD-R loaded with open-source software (not their own). Yeesh.

Something like this yeah. Your volume panel won't list it, but you can add it there by clicking on properties or advanced or whatever and then there's a list of all the different devices. Mic will just be unchecked in the playback menu, so just select it and it'll be added.

well i figured out that dell disables playback of the mic in the registry, so i had to go in and change that, now its horribly loud though, the mic volume has to be absolute minimum it can and the master volume has no control over it at all

doh!

So tech support was right and it's not their problem -- it is your Dell. Or should they support your system too? I agree, it's annoying but the whole tech support thing is annoying. What a PITA!

He understood them but didn't get any technical support which is what the staff/technical support is for.😉
