Man, that whole 256MB video memory marketing thing really works...

I doubt it, and the extra RAM on the x1600 is totally wasted 😉

The x1600 pro sucked massive balls i'm afraid, given that it couldn't even keep up with the then ancient 6600GT in most titles, while almost always being more expensive iirc...

I hate people who use store return policies as a way to avoid researching what they buy before they buy it.

As I understand it, the generations of Radeon families go something like this:

9200/9250->X300->X1300
9600/9550->X600->X1600/X1650
9700.........->X700
9800.........->X800/X850->X1800/X1900/X1950

Feel free to correct me if I'm off. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if you're trying to gauge the strength of the X1300, just equate it to the 9200's performance compared to say a 9800.

I was at frys today and I saw this kid in line holding a video card, I glanced at it and saw it was an X1300Pro. At first I thought that this kid was buying this card as a cheap replacement card for his computer's video card cause the one in there died or something. So I asked the kid how much the card was, says $125 or something, then mentioned that I hope he wasn't gaming on it, to my surprise, he actually had intentions of gaming on it.

I basically told him that the card really wasn't meant for gaming and that he should seriously consider something else. I mentioned the 6600GT and asked him what he had in his computer, turns out he has a 9800pro :smacks forehead: He said he was buying the card because the game he was playing wasn't running very well and he needed 256MB of video memory, I tried to quickly explain to him that an X1300 with 256MB is SLOWER than a 9800pro with 128MB memory.. He then said that he'll instead try it out and if he doesn't like it, he'll take it back, so I gave up on him. (Probably convinced that things will be fine)

Great, this kid goes out and buys a video card soley because of the amount of video ram thinking that hes getting a faster card when hes really getting a slower card..

I can't believe this marketing really works, just slap a bunch of video memory and all of a sudden, all cards with less than that amount are slower.. Wait until you see the surprise on his face when he realizes the game he was playing runs worse than before.. Never liked deceptive marketing, and thats exactly what this value segment is with it's large video memory with slow memory buses and slow graphics chip.

Sigh, had no idea it was that effective...

So yeah..

these r the probably the same people that think faster computer = faster internet

Fixed

I have to show them side by side...

Being halfway to a computer engineering degree isnt enough :roll:

Let me guess, cause the network icon at the corner of his screen says 100Mb? :laugh:

My brother runs an ATI 9200 (he doesn't game) and one of my best friends has an FX 5200. I have tried to get them to upgrade and another friend told me that Best Buy was selling the X1600 for $60 after rebate. I run over to BB thinking I will buy two cards for my bro and my friend, but when I get there it is actually the ATI 1300 or something similar. There was an older man there who was looking at cards and was about to buy a 1600x 512mb version and told his wife that it had a lot of ram and would be amazing. I told him to go home and read up on the actual specs of a card before blowing $250 on a card that might be slower than a 7800GT 256 or somethign.

Obviously.

I've seen many many people on Battle.net that say they have 100mbit internet.

Of course, Battle.net isn't known for the intelligence of its community.

what i dont understand is dont people see that different cards from the same company have 256mb ram but still are labeled differently and have differnt prices. wouldnt common sense tell you that there is something else to it.

Common sense is not the strongpoint of the average technical consumer.

I know tons of people like that. The only thing they ever concentrate on is memory. One just chose the cheapest one he could find with 256MB of memory.

Haha.. man a friend of mine who is very smart with computer and electronics in general, and he's very close to graduating in Soft. Eng., swapped his 128mb 9700Pro for a 256mb 9600XT, then sold the 9700Pro to my roommate who now can play BF2 on his computer. Granted this had pretty much $0 money difference, and not a huge performance difference (9600XT is newer), but damn not worth it at all.

Tried telling him no go and he must've been high when making that decision, but he was convinced FEAR ran way better, and runs fine with 2x AA now. Hmph. Mine can't do that (7800GT).

I don't as much mind that the individual product boxes boast their memory sizes, but I was disturbed watching a video playing at BB that basically just said that video memory is the only thing to look for when buying 🙁

Kind of like buying a digital camera solely for the megapixels. Nevermind the color balance, or image quality. Megapixels! (This was actually recommended in my local newspaper's "tech column")

Intel had some marketing thing out awhile ago, I don't know which CPU it was with, maybe the original P4, or even PentiumIII. Something about it, maybe the SSE, would "enhance your Internet experience." Maybe by ensuring that full-screen flash animations wouldn't drop frames?😕

Makes things that much harder for the average Joe.

:laugh: Yup, I know a guy who wished, "Webservers increased their upload capacity so that he could max out his 100mbps cable connection" :laugh:

Funny thing is, he was smart enough to know that servers don't have infinite upload bandwidth.

you get the feeling big box stores help kill the pc gaming market. you do see them selling obsolete cards for absurd amounts, pricing is almost arbitrary, anyone not keeping up with such stuff wouldn't know what to buy, probably buy on price assuming more expensive is better and get a turd. theres no way for most people to figure out much based on the box, its all nonsense, even the sh*ttiest card claims amazing things. probably turns some off gaming.

totally different with consoles, buy and xbox and its an xbox, it plays all the games at the level they are meant to.

I think we should start a company that makes crappy video cards with 1 gb of video memory. That will sell like hot cakes.

prescott < northwood. though most of my friends thought the opposite.

like how a 6200 256MB beats out my 6600GT 128MB. psh, yeah right. at least my freaken' card doesnt steal ram from the system...sheesh.

You have to admit that making a good decision when it comes to vid cards is a major PITA though. The manufacturers use ridiculous and constantly-changing naming schemes, so even if you had a good idea of what the names meant a year ago, you'll be way off. You can't just use the model number as a guide, and you can't just use the letters (and you definitely can't use the RAM amount).

Happens way too often;
i.e. person says, "omg I have a 100 mbit internet connection, but i'm only downloading at 100 KB/sec, whats wrong with my computer/ internet."
