Man, that whole 256MB video memory marketing thing really works...

I was at frys today and I saw this kid in line holding a video card, I glanced at it and saw it was an X1300Pro. At first I thought that this kid was buying this card as a cheap replacement card for his computer's video card cause the one in there died or something. So I asked the kid how much the card was, says $125 or something, then mentioned that I hope he wasn't gaming on it, to my surprise, he actually had intentions of gaming on it.

I basically told him that the card really wasn't meant for gaming and that he should seriously consider something else. I mentioned the 6600GT and asked him what he had in his computer, turns out he has a 9800pro :smacks forehead: He said he was buying the card because the game he was playing wasn't running very well and he needed 256MB of video memory, I tried to quickly explain to him that an X1300 with 256MB is SLOWER than a 9800pro with 128MB memory.. He then said that he'll instead try it out and if he doesn't like it, he'll take it back, so I gave up on him. (Probably convinced that things will be fine)

Great, this kid goes out and buys a video card soley because of the amount of video ram thinking that hes getting a faster card when hes really getting a slower card..

I can't believe this marketing really works, just slap a bunch of video memory and all of a sudden, all cards with less than that amount are slower.. Wait until you see the surprise on his face when he realizes the game he was playing runs worse than before.. Never liked deceptive marketing, and thats exactly what this value segment is with it's large video memory with slow memory buses and slow graphics chip.

Sigh, had no idea it was that effective...

So yeah..

It's because they have stupid names like X1300. I have no idea what a good card is anymore. I did buy an X800 to replace my radeon 9600 pro and it's a little better.

LOL, my friends are all like this. O CRAP 256mb for just $100! I wanna slap them sometimes when I constantly have to repeat to them that Ram is not what makes a video card fast.

x1600 Pro (512MB) > 6600GT (128MB), right? There's a thread on this at the Video section, but I see mixed responses...

I'd guess yes, but not by very much & the 512mb's has nothing to do with any advantage it might have ... in a card of that performance level you'ed be better off with 256mb's of higher clocked RAM instead.

There used to be people who thought a Geforce 4 MX440 was better than a Geforce 3 Ti 500. I once told my friend to go pick up a 128MB Radeon 9800. He calls me from the store and asks me a million times, "There's a 256MB FX5300. Are you SURE I shouldn't get this? It's even a little cheaper. Are you SURE? REALLY? POSITIVE? BUT 256MB? Higher resolution textures? NO? SRSLY? REALLY? YOU SWEAR?"

20 minutes on the Net and a couple of benchmarks is ALL it takes to make an informed decision. People need to learn to really use the Net.

hold on a second...

from what I've read, the x1300pro is basically an x1600? and the x1600 nearly matches the 9800pro 128mb which balances it out with the 256mb onboard.

I may be wrong, but that's besides the point of what I'm about to say, that an upgrade from a Radeon 9800pro to an x1300 series is totally whack for performance benefits of a faster gameplay experience.

don't worry man, some people gotta learn it the hard way. back in the AGP 4x days I was running games with PCI graphics, 4mb which was not accelerated on my AMD K6-2 HP computer. I went to Best Buy and grabbed a Radeon 7000 32mb PCI card. I later upgraded to a Geforce2 MX 64mb PCI. I couldn't even run Aliens VS Predator 2, it was like 1 FPS... straight install from a PC Gamer demo CD. I had no idea that the Geforce2 GTS was champion at the time, and it's next generation series, the Geforce 3 Ti which I could only dream of ever having, then the Geforce 4 Ti which I mouth watered over, and then when the Radeon 9700pro came out - it was over for nVidia for a very-very long time, and I wrote in my journals how much I wanted the 9700pro. I was jealous that my cousin had a 9600 nonPro AGP card, I even loathed for AGP integrated graphics motherboards.
when I finally got my x800pro running on a 2.8 Prescott, it was already too late, the Geforce 7800GT already game out~ I remember people and 'even articles' mentioning that the 7800GT was the last card, that it was "EVERYTHING" and that it could not be matched by anything ever before seen... and that ATI was no more. I was like, whatever... an X1900XT with 3rd party cooling can surpass an XTX and a 7950.
The more I kept getting, the more I realized that I was only spoiling myself, sadly. (lol)

I read reviews and do some research before I buy anything.

256MB? You're a noob if you don't get at least 512MB, that's twice as fast!

And make sure the video memory architecture is 64bit to match your processor!

😉

I don't as much mind that the individual product boxes boast their memory sizes, but I was disturbed watching a video playing at BB that basically just said that video memory is the only thing to look for when buying 🙁

the naming of the product (x1300). the amopunt of video memory which i am sure they plastered all over the box, the graphics on the box, and the fact that most retail stores don't carry the high end cards (cuz come on a 8800gtx in a best buy would be like what $1000?) so $130 sounds right for a fast card
it is all marketing and it sucks

Why do you find that hard to believe? 🙁

Because you've proven over and over that you're a worthless troll?

No. I've never been proven that I'm a troll. I've been proven that I've made worthless threads but not that I'm a troll, I'm anything but a troll. All the good deeds I've done on this forum have been overshadowed by my controversial threads because people refuse to think outside of the box or don't want to admit that there maybe no box at all.

I've had similar discussions with people I work with all the time. The amount of memory on a video card is directly related to how well the card performs. 😉 😛 It can even my Turbocache or Hyper-Memory.

For a real laugh, read the hardware/technical forums for popular games, such as The Sims 2 and WoW.
