COLONIE -- A Watervliet man was arrested after he picked up a $1,900 flat-screen TV off the shelf at Wal-Mart and took it straight to the returns counter, police said.

Philemon Ofosu, 23, was at the Latham Farms Wal-Mart on Troy-Schenectady Road just before 7 p.m. April 12 when he allegedly tried to pull the bold trick, according to Colonie police.

He got $1,995.84 cash for returning the 55-inch Samsung, police said, after which security detained him and called police.

Ofosu was sent to the Albany County Jail.

No need for a receipt..? Damn.

Walmart will take anything back without a receipt, another reason I shop there. People abuse the hell out of it, I have seen people who look like a Speed Freak on their 4th straight day up return something they probably stole, that might not even have been bought at Walmart and walk out with cash.

Interesting. I wonder what they can actually charge him with though. He didn't actually steal anything.

Fraud perhaps.

this is an oldddd trick, surprised it still works lol

i remember working at office depot in high school, some bitches were stealing tons of ink cartridges, and printing their own receipts and returning them lol they got busted while shoplifting, police saw their car, found the receipt paper, printer, tons of pornos lol it was epic

This stunt has been tried in our local Walmart and they have stopped the no receipt return policy. They use to take anything back without a receipt and give you a cash refund, depending on value of item, or a store merchandise card. Now if you don't have a receipt they won't take it back.

About 10 years ago, a friend and I went to Walmart where I bought a $300 stereo system for my apartment. I paid at the electronics counter and when walking out the door, the greeter took a highlighter and marked my receipt. As soon as we got out the door, my friend asked for the receipt, started licking his finger and rubbed the fresh highlighter off the receipt.

Once he got it all off, he told me he'd be right back and walked back into the store. About 10 minutes later, he walked out the grocery-side door with the same exact stereo. He had used my receipt and the opposite exit (for a different greeter) to get another stereo. They were none the wiser. Sadly, the only thing that really annoyed me about it was that he didn't offer me any cash back and took advantage of my purchase.

I don't think I've ever known a Walmart to give cash refunds for a no-receipt return. They've always given gift cards to Walmart around here so that you're required to put that money back into the store. They also log your drivers license number and limit you to 3 returns per year.

The sadder part of this story is that you allowed it to happen, and saddest is your greed. I weep for humanity.

Yeah, the first thing I'd be thinking if that happened to me would be "I need to ditch this guy and find a better friend"... not "Shit... I didn't profit"
