man, should i get a foldable bike for my car trunk?

This begs the question: Why?

i live in a city and sometimes i need to go somewhere (e.g. food, atm...) and i dont want to lose my parking space, or have to look for another. also there are so many bike thefts around here that it isnt practical to have a bike on a rack on the outside of your car

i cant decide what ta git. i dont want something thats gonna be troublesome as far as maintenance goes, but if folding bike turn out to be fun, im thinking ill regret not getting something with more gears

I've never actually ridden a folding bike but they just seem like a huge compromise to me. Why not just get a real bike and keep it in your apartment?

Geared bikes are a PITA. More crap to break, and I never had more fun than I did with my old bmx bike.

Agree with this. They look flimsy when people are riding them around.

i already have a collection of carbon road bikes. the purpose would be to have it in my car. yesterday i forgot to go to the atm and it was like a 15 minute walk after i parked my car, a foldie would have been perfect for that situation. the only reason i havent gotten one yet is as you point out they look a little weak with a hinge in the middle of the frame (and im 200 lb) and im not sure they would fit me (6'3), but ive never really taken a close look at them before or ridden one

No. Nobody does that, no matter where they live. And if there are even a few thefts in your area, you don't want to leave it locked up to a bike rack or a post or a tree outside, either.

You can't take a bike into your home/apartment?

Sure sounds like fun riding up and down the hills of SF. I commute with a single gear cyclo-cross bike. If my commute wasn't flat, I would be riding of my geared bikes. I like getting places quickly.

Folding bikes are a compromise but may be a good idea for your scenario. They have a pretty high resale value, so if you don't like it, selling it wouldn't be too difficult.

IF the OP is as stupid in real life as he appears to be on these forums, I'll vote a resounding "YES," and encourage him to ride it in traffic.

Some of the designs are well engineered and can handle a larger/heavier person. I would definitely recommend a geared foldable bike as a single speed with those small wheels would be a slow painful experience.

A cheaper, lower maintenance, and more compact option would be a Razor scooter (or competitor's scooter). They make ones for adult weight and if you could opt for a motorized one if you wanted. I keep a cheap one one in my car in case of a breakdown or tire problem

I'm sorry but a scooter is a dumb suggestion compared to a bike, even a single-speed with a coaster brake.

OP, get the bike - it's decent for the cost. Better than spending $1000 on a multi-speed bike that's meant for occasional use.

lol, if someone lives where there are bike thieves, thats a bigger problem

Did you read the OP's posts? He lives in a city where parking is at such a premium he sometimes doesn't want to drive because he'd lose his parking spot. Any city like that will have lots of bike thieves, and he even explicitly says there are lots of bike thieves.

also i doubt anyone is going to want to steal a 150$ bike

Keep up with comments like that and you'll start giving Red Squirrel competition as my favorite internet naif.
