Plenty of people do. I personally have decided not to keep a round in the chamber in the handgun that resides in my drawer purely to avoid accidents like this. I can say that I've never accidently touched the weapon though, but in an invasion I can remember to chamber a round.

If I had my shotgun loaded and ready for defense, I would keep a round in the chamber with the safety on however.

Agreed. I can't imagine ever having a round in the chamber. My xD-9 has 2 safeties, the liklihood of it going off accidentally is crazy low but still I don't want to risk even that. It's easy to rack and the .5 seconds it would take is worth it to me to not have to worry about accidents like this.
