GREENFIELD, Calif. -- A father is accused of trying to sell his 14-year-old daughter for marriage in hopes of getting money and 100 cases of beer in return, Greenfield police said.

Macelino de Jesus Martinez, 36, was arrested Monday on suspicion of trying to arrange to have his daughter marry Margarito de Jesus Galindo, 18, for $16,000, 100 cases of beer, several cases of meat and other items, authorities said.

The girl moved in with Galindo and when payments were not received, her father called police to get his daughter back.

Greenfield Police Chief Joe Grebmeier told KSBW Action News 8 that both Martinez and Galindo, who are immigrants from Mexico, face the possibility of being deported as illegal immigrants.

Grebmeier also said that both men didn?t fully understand that what they were doing was wrong.

Galindo was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of statutory rape, and Martinez was arrested and booked on suspicion of receiving money for causing a person to cohabitate.

Arranged marriages are common in several cultures, and police said that it is not an issue in this case.

But California law prohibits arranged marriage where one or both of the parties have been coerced.

Grebmeier said that there have been rumors of arranged marriages taking place in the Greenfield area before, but that this was the first arrest concerning the act of human trafficking in the city that he knows of.

This story is hilariously tragic, and is in the same genre as stories such as the man who emptied an AK-47 into several children when they knocked on his door on Halloween, and the man dressed as Santa who murdered several people on Christmas before killing himself.

I mean... come on. I could name 12 reasons why they should be deported, and none of them have anything to do with their citizenship.

How is this illegal if she's 18?

It's also not legal to coerce someone to marry, which arranged marriage could certainly be an example of.

I love how it suggests they might have a chance of not being deported. I'm guessing they probably will, but it seems like illegals can stay in the country fairly easily anymore. I know a Mexican guy who came to the US legally, got married in the country, has a PHD, and is going through hell right now trying to stay in the country. Ridiculous.

$16,000 plus 100 cases of beer plus meat sounds pretty expensive too me.

Not saying the guy isn't a douche bag for trying it though.

Especially for a Mexican. For that kind of money I'd expect at least some hottie from Brazil or one of the more better-looking spanish countries...

100 cases of beer is about $2,500 in my neck of the woods .......... ,that is, decent beer. I guess you could find it cheaper though.

This thread is worthless without pics.

Seriously while this may offend Western sensibilities arranged marries are more common than not throughout the world. I'm not saying it's right because it violates self-determination and various other freedoms - but lets not pretend this man is sick rather than culturally backwards.

Let the mexicans have their arranged marriages, just tell them to stop shitting in the peanut and tomato fields and I'll call it even.
