VIENNA (Reuters) - An unemployed Austrian man sawed his foot off, apparently to avoid being found fit to go back to work.
Hours before an appointment on Monday for the labor office to check on his health, the 56-year-old man held his left leg against an electric saw in his home workshop and severed his foot just above the ankle, Austrian broadcaster ORF reported.

Bleeding profusely, the man from the province of Styria then threw the foot into an oven, hobbled to his garage and called an ambulance. An emergency operation was unable to reattach the foot, ORF said.

They could still give him an office job i guess.

If you are that dedicated, you deserve to not work :D

But seriously, that's messed up. They should give him a desk job.

I admire his commitment and think he should get welfare for life. That's what the USA needs to do to fix our welfare system. If you want the money you have to be willing to saw off a body part, if you're not that dedicated you don't deserve the check.

So I am guessing in Australia people don't want to work as opposed to the U.S where people want to?

Are unemployment benefits laxer than the U.S over there?

That, or make them go through a violent competition for our entertainment.

I'm not quite sure what Australians have to do with this...considering that it happened in AUSTRIA...to an AUSTRIAN...:colbert:

BTW, stupid shit like this happens here as well. My neighbor's step son was sentenced to something like 45 days of "public service" for his "criminal activity."

(he was originally arrested for car theft, running a chop shop, possession of stolen property, etc...lawyers got MOST of it thrown out and was only convicted of a minor misdemeanor)

He didn't want to do the "trash pickup and clean up duties" so he dropped a large rock on his foot while working for the county...ended up with "house arrest and an ankle monitor.

Nothing like serving your time in the comfort of your parents' house with a big-screen TV and cable, computer, pool and hot tub...

He hocked his hacked hock?

Eidt: Re-read the article. Looks like he roasted a leg of lam.

Behold the wonders of modern medical science, where you can saw off your own foot, cook it in an oven, and still have it re-attached.
