Pelicans are cool birds. They seem to have no real fear of people. I had on land on the back of the boat and sit there begging for a snack. He was about to climb in when I shooed him away, but I did not hurt him. If I would have had something worthy for him to eat I would have gladly given it to him.

Gee, I wonder why. The welfare state's effect on society is demonstrated once again. Human or genetically-inferior bird, both alike develop a culture of obligation when they aren't made to work for their living.

Is that a new defense? Would be good for rapists, thieves, murderers...

Nobody is above the law my friend, not even big ugly birds.

adult humans don't have behavioral instincts. we have learned behaviors and urges that can be controlled. instinct is something that is a behavior that isn't learned that everyone does, like when a baby suckles for milk. that's not something the baby has a choice in doing if a nipple is presented.

bears hibernate. it's not like they have a choice. that's an instinctual behavior.

pelicans are opportunists who look for fish. it's how they've managed to survive throughout the the course of history and evolution.

so, a pelican, when presented with a flopping fish in the open, will instinctually try to nab it. it has no choice, unless it has to choose between that fish or another fish... it'll go for whichever's easiest. it doesn't sit there and think, "hmmm... is it wrong if i do this? would it be considered stealing? i'd better not, just to be safe".

I agree 100%.
