The only major problem I had with this movie is Russel Crowe does not get to be Superman's father. And given the fact that he was, there definitely was not enough telephone throwing during his fight with General Zod.
I'm so used to watching tv series where they get to devote 8 or 9 hours to a plot. Would have preferred Superman had more time to weigh the pros and cons of his own race before deciding they deserved death.
Whatever. I'd have to look back and make sure I'm not missing something, but I'd be willing to call this the best new movie I've seen this year.
And full disclosure, last superman movie I saw was probably about 20 years ago, did not see the recent one few years back, nor did I ever watch the tv show Smallville - I could definitely see how people who followed all those might be pissed off this movie really doesn't do anything useful, but for me it was very entertaining
I can see where the critics say the movie is too serious (hardly any humor), but this was a solid solid movie. I was more than entertained and thought they finally nailed Superman, this was completely believable. Great job Snyder/Nolan. Hans Zimmer killed the score as usual, acting was superb, CGI was great, and the costumes rocked my socks off. 9/10
Anyone ever wonder how it is Superheroes who treasure life never seem to have any regard for the people living in the buildings they punch bad guys through? Maybe they just "know" they're all unoccupied...
That's probably going to be the biggest complaint about the movie that they could have easily made these storylines into 2 separate films, 1st being more about his youth and development and then finding himself and the second him maturing into his roll then the general comes a calling.
Many people do not want to see an entire movie dedicated to Clark in Smallville or half of one telling his childhood. It has been told over and over. I wanted to see a Superman film with the tiniest telling of his childhood and I think they nailed it with the important flashbacks.
This movie was fantastic. I enjoyed this more than Star Trek, Fast 6 and IM3.
Just got back.. overall I was let down. Tough to put my finger on it right now, but I walked out with a kinda "meh" feeling. Enjoyable to watch once, but I don't think I'll ever see it again.
Felt really rushed at times. It was a beautiful looking movie (in a very Zack Snyder way) and a well cast Superman/Zod. Didn't care much for the casting of Lois or really
her lack of character development (she shows up and just essentially states, "I'm super badass, don't fuck with me" and then does nothing for the entire film). The little Smallville and Lexcorp additions were cute, as was the sticking in of Pete Ross and Lana Lang.
Overall something just didn't feel right, maybe it wanted the seriousness of The Watchmen with the action of The Avengers? Something didn't gel for me. Maybe after some time to think about it I'll figure out what it is, or maybe I just had it built up to something that it couldn't fulfill.
Saw it. Thought it was just ok. I honestly thought it was no better than the 2006 Superman reboot. Yes the 2013 version had more action but I felt it lacked substance. The 2006 reboot had more substance but less action. In my mind it was a toss-up.
I thought it was a decent movie overall. It was a little long, and I think it could have been trimmed a bit without sacrificing anything essential in the movie. One thing I wish they would have done with the fight scene between the big Kryptonian and the woman vs. Superman was have the big guy pick up Superman like Doomsday does when he kills Superman. Would be a nice little homage!
Although, the one thing that I thought was odd..
I'm pretty sure Superman never kills anyone, but he most certainly killed Zod. I'm guessing that's why they had him sort of freak out at the end, but it's a bit odd. It doesn't have much power for me, because all it shows was that he chose the Earthlings over his own race, but we already knew that.
Watched it earlier in 3D. Amazing and a different take from the Christopher Reeve's "Superman". Battle scenes was not bad and Metropolis (Chicago) almost leveled off.
But this confused me...
But not sure why Zod insisted in "terraforming" Earth to a Krypton-like planet with all the other millions of available uninhabited planets. I think Superman would have willing shared the "codex" if Zod wasn't using the Earth for this purpose. Same situation where the Kryptonians were mining their planet's core for it's resources which eventually doomed it. Why can't they do that somewhere else besides their own. It's a large large universe, not sure why they stopped exploring it and abandoned the scout ships that they spread around over the years. With all the technology they never had a "back-up" planet, just in case the original indeed blew up
Because the codex was missing. They had to retrieve it before terraforming, what's the point of terraforming for a handful of people who can't populate a planet? Zod's reasoning was to Terraform it to weaken Supes where they could then control him and get the codex. It was convenient to use earth as a power source since the codex was already there.
It does make you wonder if Zod and Faena could have recreated their race with a natural born baby though, they could have been the Kryptonian Adam and Eve.
Saw it yesterday and it was ok. A lot of fighting and action scenes with a mediocre plot.
Didn't know that Superman killed his opponents I thought in the original he just trapped Zod back in the blackholes/crystals. I was also expecting some Batman references or anything but I may have missed it and if Lois could find out his identity that easily, I'm sure the US gov't would have no problem either.
Saw it Friday in IMAX 3d. Thought the movie was great. Not perfect but great. I did not understand why the guy from the daily planet was treated as a slime ball at the end... Also Lois could have used a bit more development.
Action scenes were among the best I have ever seen. Def going to see it again in the theatre. Can't replicate the big screen at home.
There are references to Batman and Lex Corp from what I saw.
Just listened to the details of one of the critics that gave it a bad review.
Saw it in 3d and didn't like the effects.
Too much action.
Similar scenes/themes from other movies.
Too long.
Not enough character development and too much use of flashbacks for it.
Disliked the camera POV, looked like filmed for better viewing on portable devices.
Superman should be more of a happy-go-lucky guy, not the burdened and brooding one displayed here.
Spoilers below... but basically I thought the movie was mostly crap. That's the opinion of myself, fiancee, parents, and just about most people I know that watched the movie. For the most part here is the overall reasons before I do the spoilers as to why those reasons.
1. Massive plot holes lead to a horrible plot in general. The plot overall was junk with some massive character holes and plot holes through out. Pure garbage.
2. Action was too long and to "showy" to be taken seriously. I personally don't mind shaky camera views when done right, but it was used far too much here. Half the movie looked like the camera was handed over to a drunken irishman with Parkinson.
3. Bad acting, bad dialog, and just completely 1 dimensional characters throughout the whole movie. I couldn't get behind anyone.
What was good about the movie? Well many of the special effect scenes were pretty cool.Okay, now for the spoiler tags.
Plot holes GALORE in this movie. No real explanation of why the Kryptonians went from an expanding exploring race to one that turned into a dying on their own homeworld race. If the writers had added something like the expansion periond brought out the conquest nature of their people which brought on many wars that decimated much of their outer civilization. THAT would have made sense. That the kryptonians were scared to expand again and made the decision to weed out the evil tendencies of their race through a preselect birth protocol and banning natural births. Again that would have made some sense. But nothing to that effect was added in the story line.
Then don't get me started on the jumping around of technologies. The kryptonians use a liquid metal setup for all their displays.... except for the holographic display of Jor'el. Really? And every kryptonian ship has that same full life 3d color display capable for Jor'el? And what is with his stupid hand movements to open ship doors?
Then we have the stupid deus ex machina rife in the entire story line. Why would the kryptonians who are sent to pick up Kael'el even care about Louis Lane? Seriously, "Give us the girl?" was a stupid setup. Why would an alien race bent on one objective and that knows nothing about a single human want to have that human tag along? Oh.. it's a horrible plot device to allow someone to save superman. Because if she isn't there then he's doomed. Absolute garbage of a plot setup there. And that's just on glaring example of many from the top of my head.
Character development? There isn't any. I had zero empathy with Superman nor anyone else. All of a sudden a complete loaner wants to save everyone? The love story with Louis was completely absurd. No build up... just okay let's kiss!
Zod as an antagnoist was a joke. Who the hell tries to spend the entire time killing ants while they are in a life or death struggle. While trying to kill ants does nothing but goad the other person they are in the struggle with to kill them instead over the ants. By ants I mean us humans, because in the setup of that movie the humans really are ants to Zod. Or should be.
The whole angst over losing the "codex" is another piece of crap. IF the kryptonians can have natural births.. why is Zod so bent on a skull fragment which contains dna strains of kryptonians? Why not just suck some blood out of themselves and start cloning themselves? The whole technological viewpoint of the movie was almost worse than Swordfish. I really wanted to bang my head against the wall in how badly the movie presented things such as genetics and other known sciences. All in the name of passing off a "moral" of some sort to the audience to suck up. Which that message is mainly a political one in the sense that all "people" can aspire to be more. That we are all equal and special snowflakes. Again garbage story setup to pass that message along to the audience.
I really could go on about how bad that movie was... but suffice it to say my recommendation is to save your money. That is if you are a person that likes good plots, good character development, good action scenes, and actual entertainment. Because you'll not find any of that from the new Superman movie reboot.

Not sure how to do a good point by point where but here i go.
There were plot holes sure. but there weren't any massive plotholes that I could see. I followed the story pretty well.
The action was fine. Shakey cam was NOT used in this movie. The action was extremely fast paced so the camera moved fast, but there was no shakey cam. Even during the scene where Zod is running from superman at supersonic speeds the camera stayed steady. All the trailers and action scenes online also show no sign of shakey cam.
Weird, because every single review i've read online said that the actimg was good or great. At worst, bland maybe, the reviews blame the directors for trying to go too far in a more "serious" direction that toned down the flashiness of standard superman and so some scenes were pretty flat. Writing was fine.
That plot hole isn't a plot hole. They outright say why. Krypton was out of natural resources. The colonies weren't fully self sustaining and so when Krypton stopped supporting their colonies they slowly died. It's told right in Russel Crows speech.
Rule of cool explains the second point. None of that is plot holeish or anything. Just simply rule of cool.
The taking of Lois Lane is a bit of a plot hole, and her only purpose was to get the command key on the ship, I agree. Also, thats not Deus ex machina. That word doesn't mean a plot hole, or something that doesn't really make sense.
As for character development, I have no idea what you're talking about. There IS development for superman. Superman is NOT a willing loner. He only stayed alone because he was afraid that he would expose his powers, and not because of was afraid for himself, because he wanted to respect his dad's wishes to keep hidden until the right time. The entire first half was him trying to figure out if he should reveal himself to the world, hell the movie even has an entire scene where he is fighting with his dad because he wants to go out into the world and help tons of people with his powers, but his dad holds him back. Not exactly a loner type.
He takes the leap of faith that his dad never could and exposes himself to the world and then has to deal with the consequences of his actions and try to save as many people he can with his powers. The lois lane part was out of nowhere I agree.
Zod mostly spent his time fighting superman, his minions were the one who even bothered to kill the soldiers, and thats only because they got a thrill out of fighting. Zod tried to kill the people in front of superman because he wanted to take superman down a notch. Superman had removed his own reason for living, protecting krypton, and he wanted to show superman that he could not protect what he wanted to save and cause him the same grief. He also says this outright.
Because he is a fully conservative Kryptonian. He belives that the best way to survive is to carry on the old traditions of krypton and genetic manipulation is the only real way to do it. he wants to bring back the people of krypton, not clone themselves because 1) thats not bringing back krypton, 2) The 3 females on that ship aren't enough genetic material to be diversified enough to naturally reproduce, and 3) again, Zod fully believes in genetics dictating your role in life. If they're just cloning themselves, they're just producing soldiers. There are no scientists, laborers, politicians, nothing at all. They would not have a society.
It just seems that you're looking for things to complain about that aren't really a big deal, or is easily explainable.

Many of the plotholes could be explained... but they failed to do. Why I have no idea.. but not explaining massive plotholes is a reason why the movie sucks. The jumping of technologies, horrible use of deus ex machina, lack of any character development, and massive plotholes all make for a piss poor movie overall. Want another poor example of deus ex machina in the movie?
So the house of EL key that superman has to insert into kryptonian ships contains an artificial intelligence of his deceased father. That's all fine and dandy, but how does that AI know events surrounding Jor'EL after his death? Yah... pure BS there.. Or why does everything center around either Metropolis or some unknown Kansas city? Way to convenient.
The thing is, I could deal with one or even a small few inconsistency. There are way too many in this turd of a movie. I hadn't even gone into horrible continuity errors. Ohh such as when the Kryptonian ship lands in the center of Metropolis to start the "Terraforming" process. The scene switches to Laurence Fishburnes office window showing the ship a few blocks away. Then switches back to the ship to show it flattening everything in a massive radius around it. Then back to the intact building. Thn minutes later we are shown an even greater field of destruction around the machine and yet the daily planet still next to the ship is perfectly intact as the employee's finally decide to leave. Only to come back later to an intact building. Just stupid shit like this makes me go "Oh Gawd that is dumb."
Shaky cam not in use??? What movie were you watching? I have no problem following any of the action scenes, but the quick camera movements during most of the action scenes was readily apparent to everyone I know that watched the movie.

Quick cameria movements is NOT shakey cam. Shakey cam is literally when the scene looks like it was shot by some amateur cameraman with a substandard camera and he is running or something and can't get a good focus on what he wants us to see, and things like explosions cause the guy to come off focus.
Man of Steel just had a QUICK camera, the camera moved quickly to follow the action that was happening at supersonic speeds. The camera was always in focus to the main subject at hand and was centered properly. Quick panning shots is not shakey. They're just quick panning shots.
The movie doesn't really have major plotholes. It has some, but to call them major would be a massive overstatement.
Also, there IS character development. Hell even Lois Lane has character development. Superman has development.
I saw this yesterday and enjoyed it. I agree with most of the reviews regarding lack of character development. My major grief is I thought the film lacked color. For a heavy CG flick the coloring, IMO, was rather dull.

The only thing that Jor El knew of the circumstances of what happened afterward are things that he knew would happen. His mother died, and Krypton is gone. He told superman of the history of Krypton and everying else he learned from what was happening at that very moment. He didn't have any knowledge he shouldn't have.
Also, the flattening scene was nowhere NEAR as dramatic as you say. The rate of the expansion was like a couple of meters at a time, the dust cloud was huge sure, but from the street shots, the thing expanded like 1-2 cars at a time, not exactly some sort of huge area.
Shaky cam not in use??? What movie were you watching? I have no problem following any of the action scenes, but the quick camera movements during most of the action scenes was readily apparent to everyone I know that watched the movie.
Yea there was heavy shaky cam usage as well as the Zoom out and Zoom in camera. It was getting kind of ridiculous with the camera panning out and zooming in and panning out again. It looked like some CGI guys were so excited to learn about the Zoom function that that kept using it throughout the movie.
