Unfortunately that seems to be hearsay, as the residents claim it was open. This is just messed up. There's no way this should be even remotely possible.

That's insane. Why bother owning a house in the UK when someone can just come along and take it?
As a homeowner who's done considerable amount of work to his house, I'd lose my mind and shoot those fuckers in the OP's story!
And the fact that the lawyer got more land than the defendant in the settlement in jlee's link, just boggles my mind!! So the couple bought the land, paid taxes on it for 21 yrs, and then only gets 20% of the land in the settlement when their own lawyer gets 25%?!?
