Moved by the plight of a single mother who appeared on Oprah Winfrey's show last year to tell of losing her home to Hurricane Katrina, members of a Palatine church invited her to live rent-free in their parsonage.

St. Paul United Church of Christ has hosted Keisha Moran, 23, and her children since last September, providing them with the means for starting a new life--including donations of clothing, furniture, food and even a car. But the church now says it is time for Moran and her three children--ages 5, 1 1/2 and 4 months--to leave and get on with life on their own.

"Our commitment was to provide housing for you and to give you an opportunity to become self-sufficient after the losses you experienced from Hurricane Katrina," the church's Executive Council told Moran in a letter. The council said that it is time for Moran to take "the next step" by herself.

One problem: Moran doesn't want to go. She said she is being kicked out prematurely and for no good reason.

"I have three little kids. They don't deserve to be put out on their behinds," she said.

Moran's predicament is similar to that of other Katrina victims who remain unprepared to fend for themselves, say experts who have counseled evacuees.

christ women you had a year worth of free rent, food etc to give you a chance ot get on the ball and be a productive member of society. instead this lazy bitch would rather cry and beg for more handouts. fvck her. if she refuses to get a job and pay her own way kick her out.

heh i love this part.
McNamara said hosting the family has been "an incredible blessing." But the church community has provided all the help and resources it could muster over the past 11 months to help Moran get on her feet. Day care and job opportunities have been offered, McNamara said.

"I'm certain there are thousands of people in Illinois or anywhere across the country who, if they were given the opportunity to live rent-free in a home the entire year and have their needs met, would seize the opportunity and change their life in such a way that the future would be radically different," McNamara said.

fvck give me free rent, child care and a job! I'm am sure there are thousands in IL that would jump at this chance. this women takes advantage of the generosity of others and just takes takes takes.

really it pisses me off. what a surprise eh?

Hoping the worst on this woman isn't going to teach her that she's not entitled to anything unfortunatly. The only thing that you can hope for is she gets off her arse and starts taking care of her life instead of trying to get others to do it for her.

Wow. Kick her to the curb, you know? Speaking as a person born in New Orleans and who visited almost yearly before Katrina, these people are just retarded scammers.

Bah, I spent a night in a shelter when Ivan came roaring right past us on our road trip. Made a cool animated GIF of our route with the timestamped radar images showing how close it had come, but it ends up at about 5MB...here's an excerpt
Can I get free rent now?:p

Granted, my car was still there the next morning, so yeah.

this woman has a 4 month old baby which means that in the las year she's lost everything she oiwned been pregnant and given birth. Obviously nobody can subsidize anyone forever but I'd say she's had a pretty tramatic time, I don't know of any employer who'd hire a woman who was obviously pregnant.

I'm willing to bet she wasn't even close to being self-sufficient prior to katrina.
Having her first child at around 18 then another one just before her first heads off to school, seems rather convenient.

Living off of the public dollar really is a full time job.

I think the church needs to treat her like a crazy ex-girlfriend.... just toss all her junk outside, change the locks, and get a restraining order.

This is one of the many reasons Louisiana is at the bottom of almost every categories. We are talking about generations after generations of people that expect to be feed, house, and taken care off from birth to death.

that's not my point. This church, rather than getting behind a charity or funding a local needy person actually went out of state to bring this woman and her family in, I don't know that doing that and then expecting this family to be totally self suffient in under a year is realistic. I'm inclined to believe that they did tell this gal she could stay till the end of Dec and are backpeddling now, probably because she's not embracing the church and/or a new christian lifestyle.

What that church did was basically standard practice for many organizations during the Katrina situation.

Did the woman not have any family? Where is the father(s)? What happened to the media coverage of that? Must have got lost in the bleeding heart bs.

With millions of people displaced, and many families in the exact same, if not worse, situations than mentioned in the article, why is it she cannot get any semblance of a life going? We had many katrina "victims" taken into western NY and none of them are anywhere near the charity case this woman is. In fact all of them are actually living their lives and not creating a media stink about it.

This women went on Oprah (the epitome of charity pandering bs), then was taken in by a church (who she isn't even a member or a believer of) and gets everything from food to a car, basically everything she needs to live and probably MORE than she had before, and she still can't get her act together? I completely fail to believe she is anything more than a charity/welfare case.

I saw that you edited your post, even if she could stay to January 2007, you honestly think that she would make drastic changes to her life within 6 months if she hadn't already within 1 year?

My take is that because of the disaster her handouts got cutoff, now this one is getting cutoff, and she's looking for another.
