HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. -- An auxiliary officer for a local police department was killed when a machine gun discharged at a private gun show in Blair County.

Michael Kurty, 36, of Hollidaysburg, was killed Wednesday night during a gun expo at the Hollidaysburg Sportsmen's Club.

Police said a Gatling mini-gun attached to a Humvee fired a few thousand rounds earlier in the evening before it discharged and released a fatal shot to Kurty's head.

""What appears to have happened is there was some sort of a jam and when they were trying to clear the jam is when the gun actually went off," said Pennsylvania State Police trooper Jeff Petucci.

A military official was expected to disarm the Humvee on Thursday.

Officials said Kurty was proficient in all types of firearms and conducted training for many local police departments.

The incident remains under investigation. Stay with Channel 6 News and WJACTV.com for continuing coverage as details become available.

Even though this was just one round, that scene in RoboCop with ED-209 in the boardroom comes to mind for some reason.

For those that don't know, a min-gun fires when the barrel rotates. So if there was a round in one of the barrels and it was manually rotated, it would fire. Not sure if thats what happened, but it's the best guess right now.

I was at a gun show in Houston once when someone thought it would be a great idea to demonstrate one of the firearms to a potential customer.
Fired one shot into the roof.
I have never seen that many people hit the ground at once, or police officers run that fast.
Needless to say he was arrested and all of his firearms were confiscated.

ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

Know your target and what is beyond.

The guy was an expert in firearms. Hard to understand how something like that could happen to somebody with his knowledge of firearms.

He was an auxiliary officer. Not a tactical arms ninja. He probably was told how to write tickets and not shoot himself in the leg.

"Officials said Kurty was proficient in all types of firearms and conducted training for many local police departments." - second to last sentence in the article.

The next question is was he one of the people trying to clear the jam and if so then he doesn't sound as proficient as the article says he was.

All the trigger does is spool the motor which spins the barrels. Like I said 15 posts ago, just manually turning the barrel would cause the weapon to fire. Also, you can't unload a round that has been loaded into a barrel. The only way is to fire the rounds. Perhaps there was a malfunction, who knows until there is more info.

Anyways, guy was an idiot for not following the other 2 rules.
