One danger of being in management is when companies are doing reorganization it's usually management that is first on the chopping block.

Then again if you manage to keep a 250k+ job for a few years you should not really have any financial issues for a while even if you do lose your job. Live like you make a normal salary and invest/save the rest. If I made that much I'd probably try my best to keep it for 15 years then retire early. Then again if you don't have to retire may as well stay on the gravy train unless the job is really stressful.

Typically lower end management deserves what they make as they still have to put up with lot of crap and generally have a decent work load compared to upper management.

What makes me sick to my stomoc is how much money upper management/exec people make and those are the people who can make decisions that ruin people's lives and they get even more money for making those decisions.

For some $250k+ is a normal salary.

Director, VP, CxO, etc typically work a ton of hours that the staff doesn't usually see. Usually 10 hours plus in the office then calls with other regions or "dinners" out with clients. Leading up to quarterly board presentations nights and weekends for a couple of weeks before. When your boss is at the beach his wife is giving him stink eye and he's feeling like a shitty parent a lot of the time. Sure, there is a bit of getting over here and there, but on balance it ain't a cake walk. And that's just the hours. You gotta perform and you gotta add value.

When the chips are down one can spend 2 or three hours thinking and preparing for a 30 minute call with clients or the board. Very stressful but also very exhilarating.

I think for most people leadership isn't about the hours you put in but the difference you make for the company, your team and your staff. Very rarely have I seen an executive that was truly effective working less than 50-60 hours a week on average. I've seen some with great potential work more and wreck themselves.

When the stars align to get some down time, take it and don't feel guilty.

Do you really live in Denver, CO?

The first time I skied was at Beaver Creek a couple years ago. So many managers and the like just relaxing and doing their thing. Some interruptions in their day, but they handled it and their feet on the floor and hands at the wheel back home got it worked out.

I wouldn't live there (I had to wash my rental car for that shitty snow that has crap all over your hand just opening your car door), but it's a nice place to visit.

There was a 20 something dude at one of the bars I was enjoying, he brought out like a dozen women to his 'lodge' his daddy gave him for his 18th birthday. It was really his dad's house, but dad wasn't living there.
Yep, Denver weather is so much different from the mountains even though it's really close. Right now our mountains are getting feet of snow and many of the highways are closed up there, but my yard doesn't have a single flake of snow and it's supposed to be 60 degrees tomorrow.

And yep seen a lot of the wealthy families that give their kids the free ride. They always end up just fine since that is old money. But right now Colorado is especially getting silly, it's looking like it did in the late 90's as far as over paying jobs and the prices of housing is going nuts. But like it did in the early 2000's the music stopped and people lost their ass cause they lived to those means. I really don't see how all this is going to keep up, only thing confusing me this time is I don't know what the bubble is based on. We had the Dotcom crap, then the house prices can only go up and house flipping bubbles.. I don't know what is driving this one though.

This is happening in several places of the country...you have a median home value that is like 20-30% less than the median home value of new listings.

It's causing good areas to go from a decent COL to a very high COL. Texas is one of the key areas being affected.

For people generally in this position. How do they get put in that position? Is it based on seniority or connections?

Seriously, knowing how to present themselves in speech, behavior, and even resume (of course backed up by real work).

A coworker of mine did same work as I eight years ago. I padded my resume, talked nicely, and hopped few jobs. Now I make pretty good $$ consulting.

He says he's not good with talking and such. He's still doing same job as a project coordinator. I make near triple he does now.
