I heard AK's suck for accuracy but man a whole mag dump and notta, zilth, zero...
Depends on the AK and if one is firing full-auto or not. The AKM (basically an improved AK-47, it is what most people call an AK-47), like all automatic weapons, is highly inaccurate if one just holds down the trigger instead of firing short bursts or semi-auto. I assume that the guy had a semi-auto AKM (which is far cheaper and readily available, but the full-auto one is legal (if you have the proper paperwork)), which means it should have been MORE accurate than one set to full-auto mode.
The AK-74, which is what The Red Army uses (it replaced the AK-47 / AKM), is significantly more accurate thanks to a modern 5.45x39 bullet (similar to the bullet in the AR-15 / M16). The AKM / AK-47 uses the older 7.62x39 round, which is good for punching holes directly through people, but is not as accurate and does not cause (AFAIK) the same horrific maiming of the "poison bullet" (the name given to the AK-74's round by the Afghans that it was used against).
But, this guy was close enough such that the accuracy difference between the 7.62x39 and other non-scatter rounds should not be relevant.
