so i left a negative review of a business on yelp and then i viewed it on their site in the same browser window while still logged on, and it appeared to be on their site. then i viewed the yelp site in a different browser without being logged in, and THE REVIEW I HAD LEFT WAS NOT VISIBLE ON THEIR SITE, even though it still appeared to be posted on the site when logged on. ive noticed that yelp has a disclaimed saying they dont suppress reviews, but it appears they do, and on a regular basis, for businesses that are yelp "members", gist sayin'...

by the way ive tried to post review several time since and the same thing happened, so it wasnt just that review. it appears that yelp is just a "better business bureau" scam, where they use negative reviews to force businesses to pay them to suppress those reviews. please support free speech at yelp by wearing "je suis oblama" buttons

I'm familiar with a product that has lag between when user submits content and when it shows up. While it might take several minutes to show up for everybody else, it will show up instantly for you.

There is a lag between when the content is created by the user and when the content is readable by all of our servers around the world. This is due to 1) replication time and 2) the content has to go through a moderation process before being visible (and some percentage of content get flagged for human review).

To make the the process more seamless for the user creating the content, we keep a cache of content recently created by the user. This way we can display content you just submitted even though it might not be in the database yet.

I'd suspect Yelp works a similar way.

I'm guessing the same. Especially the moderation portion. They are a large review-centric site, there's probably tons of shit on there they moderate out.

Then again, I don't put it past them to do what the OP says, either. After all, business is business 😀

I have serious questions about their motivations when they will openly state they will improve "visibility" of positive reviews if you pay for advertising with them.

After seeing a number of my reviews disappear, and reading about several lawsuits going on involving questions of review moderation and extortion, I've come to the conclusion that yelp is unreliable for anything but basic information (location, hours, pictures, and even then they eff up the hours 1/10 times)

I shifted over to tripadvisor (not to say I'm convinced they're any better honestly.)

I've noticed a lot of sites doing something similar these days. You can leave a review or comment, and if the post isn't approved or is removed, you can still see it, but it can't be seen by anyone else. You'll never realize it unless you view the site without being logged in, or through another account.

My guess is that they want to control what's posted (as you'd expect), but at the same time, they don't want to discourage anyone from posting in the future. If many of someone's comments/reviews are rejected, then they're unlikely to bother trying to post any more.

In my experience Yelp is pretty reliable when an establishment has a large number of reviews and becomes less useful ans the number of posted reviews decreases.

Having said that I've also noticed a few of my negative reviews simply vanishing.

Note to mods, if you can do that to him ^ here that would be great.

Many thanks

I have had zero problems posting yelp reviews. When I look at the reviews that are filtered, they very commonly are (1) negative; and (2) from new users with almost no review history. I don't have a problem with that since I can still read them if I want by clicking the link to see filtered reviews.

I've posted a few negative reviews and none of them are filtered. But I have posted a few dozen reviews in all and participated in talk threads, so maybe someone's overall involvement with the site is factored in to whether a review is filtered or not.

Greetings, friends. Do you wish to look as happy as me? Well, you've got the power inside you right now. So, use it, and send one dollar to Happy Dude, 742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield. Don't delay, eternal happiness is just a dollar away.

My 2-star review of a restaurant is there even when not logged in. So is my 1-star review of a transmission shop.

Yelp's real business plan is to extort business to advertize or become members in order to suppress bad reviews: http://kitchenette.jezebel.com/a-court-has-ruled-its-totally-cool-for-yelp-to-extort-b-1632255482

They shouldn't be suing for extortion, they should be suing for defamation.

Yelp is intentionally creating a misleading picture of the restaurant, thereby defaming them.

(Perhaps i should go around spamming the net with how evil Yelp is, then when they reach out to me, offer them membership in the 'tynopik benefit fund')
