Ive gone through several sleep paralysis episodes in my youth. but it was never associated with nightmares. The first couple of times I would wake up in a extreme state of FEAR. I dont know wtf i was scared of, but after a couple of seconds i would go right back to sleep. During the final episodes, I would wake up and try talking and if i couldnt do that, i would try to move my arm but never could, until what I could remember is the last time i had sleep paralysis, i woke up and tried to move my arm, and I did. that was the last time i ever had that sleep paralysis shit.

strong echo in here

Wow. Words can't even describe how awful that would be. Wow.

I hope this opens some eyes. Until we can know exactly what is going on in the heads of each individual case, we shouldn't be putting anyone in a coma to death.

Could you imagine? Being conscious of your family gathering around you, pulling the plug and watching you die? Wow.

I'd rather them pull the plug after a week then sit through 23 years. Er, lay through 23 years.

Well, fair enough.. I guess I'm a "glass half full" guy. But also think of it from the point of view of the family - would they be able to go through with something like that knowing that you were intently watching them, perhaps screaming at them to stop?

It's just an awful thought all around.

Would they really been screaming for them to stop? If you absolutely had no way of communicating with the outside world can you legitimately have any kind of quality of life? Your family can't visit you everyday, people eventually have to get on with their lives. You'd basically be in solitary confinement for 20+ years without even the ability to move. How that doesnt drive someone to psychosis is beyond me. And even if you do snap out of it, you dont just jump up and get on with your life like in Kill Bill. Your life is totally fucked forever. People who get out of comas after a few weeks have cognitive and motor deficits that can last a lifetime. If you're in a coma for 20 years and some how miraculous "wake up", i'd be impressed if you dont gag on your own drool.

Seems interesting that in American society the concept of "being alive" is so monumental that the idea of "quality of life" is almost an after thought. It's also what makes our end of life care so expensive in comparison to other countries

I'm pretty good at amusing myself so maybe I would be OK with it. :awe::awe::awe::awe::awe::awe::awe::awe::awe:

IT'S A FRAUD. It's a disgusting what they're doing here. Put him out of his misery already, please. Let science take it's course.

The Amazing Randi debunks it here: http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/a7hnv/wow_it_turns_out_the_guy_who_was_paralyzed_but/

Interesting. No doubt he was helped, but you'd think there is more to his supposed expressing thoughts than someone typing for him before they announce he's conscious. Then again, if he's still paralyzed, how could there be...

That is completely it. The quotes in the (terrible) article are from this typing mechanism that someone wrote for him. This is insulting to science and to the man himself.

The thread title of him being in a "coma" is also completely misleading, he is not in a coma.
