worked 3rd shift last night, couldn't fall asleep till like noon,I'm awake now and still wiped out, oh well at least I exercised this morning and woke up with enough time to pack a healthy lunch for tonight.I swear 3rd shifters must have lower life expectancies than other people.Any tips on how to adjust my schedule ?

I'm not sure if you've done it already, but consider craping heavy towels or something over your windows in the bedroom. A dark room will eventually fool your mind into thinking that you're sleeping at night. Studies have shown that the mind tries to wake itself up when it senses sunlight under normal conditions.

Other than that, my only advice is time, really. Eventually, your body will get used to it - even if it takes a couple weeks.

Good luck, Baff :)

I'd worked second or third shift all my life but when I got laid off almost 2 yrs ago I switched over almost automatically to more of a day shift sleep cycle. The company hasn't decide yet which shift they want to assign to me as my primary(we all take turns with on call )
The night shift crew leader was looking at the schedule at the end of our shift and told me he's going to request that I be assigned to them)I guess they liked me,which is good but it won't be if I can't sleep during the day.One thing is for sure,if I work nights I'm going to keep my tanning membership and force myself to get to the gym even if I'm exhausted, lol, don't want to become a pasty faced geek :)

"Been dazed and confused for so long it's not true." :)

I know how you feel, though. I'm going on my 26th day in a row of working.

When I worked different shifts, what worked best for me was waking up just before going to work. When I tried to be awake all day and then go to work, I was dragging my butt by the end of the shift.

dont worry baf, you'll adjust.

if you want to do stuff in the evening i suggest going to bed as soon as you get home from work. dont do anything else, just go to bed, if you do anything you wont feel tired til the afternoon.

i found it easiest however to stay up when i got home and run my errands and stuff then sleep until i had to get up to get ready for work.

i loved working midnights.

edit: hahaha im the palest girl i know. i was soooooo pale all summer because even on the weekends i was awake all night and asleep in the day. i was described at one point as "translucent"

I usually found a bar that was open at 7:00am and had breakfast and 6 or so beers. Never had a problem sleeping.
