Man, I want a Jeep. Anyone else like Jeeps?

I have wanted one since my father had a 82 CJ7 when I was a kid, but I couldn't afford the usual high price they charged for any Jeep in good condition, I mean a 73 went for only a couple of grand in 73 and now they want more then they payed new for it, and that is just in average condition.

Anyhow, i'm thinking of selling my 1989 Dodge Conversion Van and buying a Jeep with the proceeds. My van's Blue Book is 7K in excellent condition, which it is in, and it's also got the TV, VCR, Nintendo, power windows, power locks, Hi-Top, A/C, Magnum V8 and virtually any option you can think of in a conversion van, so I figure i'll try and get 5K for it and start looking for a good Jeep. Do you think I could get 5K for the van in excellent condition if that is what Kelly Blue Book says it's worth?

So are there any other Jeep fans on this forum? If there are you can tell me what year is best and basically what I should look for. other than that I know I could go to a Jeep site, but I like ATOT and am more comfortable asking questions about stuff here.

I always like jeeps but I don't think I'll ever bother getting one. If I ever get time to do more off-roading, I'd consider it, but probably not until I'm too old and weak to kayak.
The reason I don't want one is just because they don't offer enough functionality and as you said, they're over priced. Prices for parts are also disturbingly expensive, too. My gfs brother has one and the cost to fix things when they break drives him up the wall.

Anyway, given unlimited disposable income, I'd go for the tasty Land Rover Defender-110. Oh sure, it's a Land Rover, but it seats 10 PEOPLE. It's like friggin mudbus. Too bad they're like $70k

I think I'd stay way the hell away from any of the newer Jeeps. I don't like cars that are apt to strand me on the roadside.

Brakes every 20k miles, service issues -- bah! They still look great sitting by the side of the road waiting for the flatbed to arrive. ;)

I just got a 1987 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer with 127k for $3,ooo. When looking for jeeps, try to get the 4.0L engine because anything under that will be underpowered.

If you ant a new one, wait for the 2003 Rubicon edition for the Wrangler. From the sounds of it, it is loaded. ready for wheelin' out of the box. If you are looking for an older one. Look you a YJ, I think they are from about 91-95(ones with the square headlights). They aren't too bad in price. My GF has a 2000 Wrangler, and I love it. I didn't like them at first. I had the same arguements you guys did, but it is more functional than I thought and it is so fun to drive.

Certified fan here. However, you should decide what you're going to use it for before buying a Jeep. Is this going to be your primary vehicle? If so, I would not recommend the CJ/TJ/Wrangler 'jeep' style that everyone is familiar with. It just isn't very practical for everyday driving. With limited funds the Cherokee is probably the best bargain, you still have the 4x4 capability of a 'real' Jeep with a larger engine, hardtop, ability to carry 4 adults comfortably, and locking dry storage.

What do you like more, the way the short wheelbase follows every rut in the road, or the inability to hold a conversation at 75MPH?

I like Jeeps, too, but as I said I wouldn't recommend owning one as your sole transportation, especially if your current vehicle is a full-size fan. Lose a lot of cargo capacity that way.

But if it's your second or third vehicle then they're fun to have, like owning a convertible sportscar. There's just a right use for each.

My brother LOVED his . . . until he put about $4,000 into a new engine and various other crap that broke in the last couple years. Now he wants a Tacoma. ;)

It is a Jeep thing. I know jeep owners that would never drive anything else.

I, myself have a subaru forester. Its anti-jeep in every way. Its actively marketed towards the gay and lesbian market. Soccer moms drive it. It's soft and delicate. And yet, I am secure in my manhood. Who cares if it makes my penis shorter? When I'm driving it, i don't even notice.

Oh I understand completely. I love Triumph Spitfires and MG-B's and Midgets, but I can still be honest with myself--as much as I love them, I make sure I have my AAA card with me when I drive one and that most all of these cars have 3 kinds of parts on them: Brand new ones you just replaced, ones that are broken, and ones that are about to break.

Ignorant fools that belive anything the media tells you ;)

My Jeep just hit 185,000 miles, original everything, and that's not uncommon at all for the 4L I6. The 4L I6 is one of the most reliable engines ever. I have a 4.5 lift kit with 32/11.50 tires sitting in my basement right now waiting for warm weather to install, can't wait to do some real offroading this summer!

Well, in a way it would be my primary vehicle but on the other hand, my fiance does have a 240sx that I could drive if it gave me any problems, but I don't want to do something i'm going to regret, since my van is very, very dependable, not to mention it's like a home on wheels.

I was thinking along the lines of a CJ-7 somewhere in the mid to late eighties. Are there any major problems with those particular years? I am a mechanic so I would only be paying for parts when something breaks, not labor. Are they really that un-funtional? Come on guys, give me more input.

I like Jeeps... I don't really like the traditional ones as much because they're not a practical ride for someone like me, but I like the new Liberty's alot..

i ride in my friend's jeep almsot everyday.. he has a 2002 wrangler with the 4.0L and 4" lift with 34" tires. it's a cool little car, and we've taken it out to the desert twice already... it's awesome on all terrain, whether rocky or hard packed dirt with gravel, or very soft sand... just drop the air pressure down to 15lbs and it'll go anywhere.. i had lots of fun in the desert.. it also towed the dune buggy out there nicely. but i wouldn't get it for a daily car either, it's too noisy and wastes alot of gas...

I've got a 2000 Grand Cherokee, about 20k milies on it (new when I got it). It's allright, haven't had any major problems with it (never had ot be serviced. Only problem is that when you go from N to R or D it jumps pretty hard, really have to mash the brake to keep it from making a rough shift. Doesn't seem to hurt anything, just seems poorly done. Just like any other domestic vehicle, has quite a few rattles (V6 and not 4x4, leather interior and wood trim, etc). It's not the high end GC, it's the one right below it (Limited or Laredo, I can't remember and don't feel like getting up). Have been disappointed from that standpoint, the rattles and such, but not suprised by it. Just a general get around vehicle and going to get rid of it.

My father has a 2001 Tahoe and it owns the GC in every possible way, but was a bit more expensive. No problems yet, and is just a much better built vehicle (actually I've been real impressed with the Tahoe, way better than any GM or domestic car I've owned or driven extensively). Kicks major ass and definately getting the 4x4 and V8 in it. And for those who bitch about SUV's, kiss my ass, I need one :). No other way to haul around building supplies and other stuff I need. A truck would be useless because I would have to constantly unload it to keep stuff from being stolen from the bed.

I'm addicted.
