My girlfriend is talking seriously about moving from Oakland to Findlay, OH. We came here from Akron, Ohio 2 years ago and she's a chemical engineer at a big chemical company here.
She's very much hated her job the whole time. I started out doing web dev contract work and then worked for two different software comapanies and just got laid off a couple weeks ago. We were looking at houses here a couple months ago but it's way expensive. The average price of a home in the area is about $380,000 and on our salaries (she makes about 67k/yr and I made 50k/yr) we could only really justify a $300,000 house and it sucks to even spend that much.
Lately though she just want to get out of here mostly because she hates her job and also because it's so expensive. I tried to tell her to look seriously for another job, but she says she doesn't have the energy for that.
We've got some friends in Phoenix, AZ and I told her if we really have to move out of the Bay Area then lets at least stay out West and move to Phoenix. We went for a visit and she liked it and this is still a very strong possibility. Phoenix is cheap, the average price of a home is $120k and you can rent a 3bdrm house with a pool for $800/month compared to the $1800/month we're paying now.
But right now she's visiting her parents and they are trying to talk her into moving back to Ohio. Her company has a plant in Findlay where she might be able to transfer WITH NO DECREASE IN SALARY. That means she could make 67k in some tiny little town where everything is dirt cheap. I can't expect my Bay Area salary to come back with me to Findlay, I doubt there's much of a tech industry there at all. Maybe I could get a job in Toledo making 35k or something. Put in an awkward position of her making twice what I make.
The bottom line is I spent 20some years in Ohio already and I want to see other things. I will be completely miserable there. I'm not even sure what to do about it. I can stay here and keep looking for jobs and hope I land something that pays big and she'll consider staying (which is really what i want) or I could head down to Phoenix and stay with my friends and get a decent job and a place and tell her to take a couple months off before looking for a new job. The tech job market sucks all over though. I just don't want to end up back in Ohio and it's not even close to my old friends there.
