...got them yesterday. Ive been trying to put it together, and Ive gotten somewhere, wxcept now i dont know what to do....

I put the mobo into the case, put the proc/heatsink on, video card in, sound card in, connected drives, power/reset switch connected, dont know where to connect the lights on the front of the case (X-Dreamer II), cant get HD to fit, the screws w/the fan/case wont fit each other, have a bunch of cables that came w/ my mobo that i dont know what to do with. etc etc.

I was so confident that I would be able to put it together, My friend even took apart his computer(a while back) to show me the basics, and now that it comes down to it. I have approx $1600 worth of parts that i cant use. Im a first time builder, and have been using mchbgons guide, but it doesnt anyswer all of my questions. Are there any other good comp building guides out there?

Dont bug me about grammar, I dont especially care right now.

So the system won't POST? The guide suggest to test your mobo/proc/memory/video before installing the rest. After that of course you'd go on w/the HD, optical drives, etc.

If you are having problems, and have $1600.00 in parts....take it to a local computer place and let them put it together for $100.00 or so.

If you have a friend or somebody who has done it before, get them to help.

 
Why don't you start with the problem that is most troubling you. Which one is that?

Tell us what motherboard you're using. That may help us with the cables.
 
the mobo is an A8N-SLI delux. Every time I try to put the HD (A seagate barracuda) in, it takes a while to get it settled in. When it is, its never in all the way, or its crooked or something.
 
On the HD;

Because you have to line up the case holes to the drive, they rarely seat all the way at the front of the case. They usually always hang rearward into the case some.

You know it needs to be screwed in from both sides of the case, correct? You'll have to remove the other side cover unless the drive cage is removeable. Looks as though it isn't though, if I'm looking at the same case at Newegg. X-Dreamer II

No pics of the cables at Newegg on your board. That's a pisser!
 
I am gona come right out and be a dick:

If you cant figure out mounting the HDD in a drive bay with screws you need to step back and call a friend over to help.

keep your head up, dude! if you can post pics, i'm sure people here will tell you what's wrong.
 
Calm down. Everyone's gone through this. Even after building many rig's I still h8t the part of getting DOA components and screwing up a good build. That's why you must start with the basic's first. Do this: TAKE EVERYTHING APART.

Then:

1. Make sure the core components are working (cpu/video/MB/RAM/PSU). Do this by installing the cpu according to the installation instructions included by AMD. Install the RAM, Video card, and set the completed board on an anti-static bag. Plug in Powersupply to the board and make sure you have the 12V-4 pin connector plugged in also. Turn on the PSU and short the power-on connector to make the system boot (this is done by inserting a flat/phillips between the two pins that are for the power button connector).

If everything works you should get video on the monitor displaying your CPU speed and such. If the system still isn't booting double check to make sure the ram and video card are seated CORRECTLY. If all else fails getting the system to POST come here.🙂

2. If the system post's properly, then this part should be a cake walk. Install the board into the chassis along with the drives according to MechBgon's guide.

You're taking a chance, jumping in and learning something new. Good for you!!! You're not a sack o' sht. You're going to run into things that'll make wonder why you ever tried this at all. When you get stumped, take a break. Walk away from it for a bit. You'll get it eventually, one way or the other, and next year you'll probably be helping others in this or some other forum. I'll leave the expert help to the experts. There are plenty here willing to help. Don't worry, be happy! 😎
 
Don't feel too bad - you have the parts and one way or another you'll have your PC eventually. Post your entire parts list for us.

Lots of mobos come with extra cables you will never use. Use what you need and the extras may come in handy some day. Just tuck them away in a box somewhere (but don't forget that you have them!). Go through the mobo manual. I've never had an Asus board but I'd suppose that they have good documentation.

To get started, the only cables you'll need are:

power cables
- 1 or 2 for motherboard - see mobo docs for details
- 1 for each hard drive
- 1 for each optical drive
- 1 for video card if it requires one
- 1 for floppy drive if you're using one

IDE or SATA cable for the hard drive (depending on what drive you're using)

IDE cable for optical drives

floppy cable if you're using a floppy drive

audio and light cables can wait

TIPS
- GOODEST IDEA: Put together only what it needs to boot, first. Then when it's up and running, work on the extras.
- keep your hard drives on the main IDE cable (unless you're using SATA) and the optical drives on the other
- the hard drive will mount somehow. Just move the drive back and forth in the bay until the screw holes line up.
If the screws that came with the case don't work with the drive, find some that will.
- If in doubt about the way you're doing something, best not to break anything and stop until you know what you're doing.
- don't put your foot, fist, screwdriver, head, ...or anything, through the case. Blow off steam on the cat, instead.
 
Well, get your friend over there before you break something, silly! 🙂 You shouldn't feel like a sack o' sh!t unless you break something because you're too embarrassed to ask for help. (The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask until it's too late!)

And to help connecting the wires, read your motherboard manual. It's been in there for me.

P.S. One thing that's not always explained is that LEDs need to be connected with the proper polarity in order to work, so if your power and/or HDD LEDs don't light up, turn the connector around. (It won't damage anything, so don't worry about that. Just reverse the connection.)

also if you have a newer power hungry vid card did you plug the power supply cable into it as well if it has one?
