Man, how did rent become so expensive.

When I was at UIUC from 2005-2006, I had a one year lease on a 3 bedroom apartment for $800 per month. My two roommates and I split up the rent three ways, so it was $267 per month for me. I thought it was a little expensive for me, since I only made about $700 per month.

Now, in Chicago, all one bedroom apartments go from $800 to $1200, with the $800 per month apartments being older and more desolate than the more expensive ones.

Wow, I need to pay over 4x as much as I used to.

I hear you....graduated this month, moving to DC in august to start my job and rent for Studios (not even 1 bedroom places) is like 750-1300 unless you want to live out in the country.

I pay 825 in Lakeview for a 1br. That's just how it is in the nicer neighborhoods. Look at Logan Square, Hyde Park, East Southside, or up north (of Irving) if you want more reasonable prices.

How close are you to Wrigley Field? Do you have a link to your apartment complex?

We pay $1874/m for a one bedroom here in the SF Bay Area. We're moving to Raleigh, NC next month and looking at a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment for $835 a month.

Be glad you don't live in NYC. I'm still trying to find a nicer apartment with rent low enough to have money left to put in the bank. Anyone have any suggestions for a 1 bedroom close to midtown Manhattan, I'm willing to move to Jersey but don't know the area well.

Got a baby on the way? 😉

Why 2 bedroom?

Yeah, it's rough. I live in a small town in Mississippi and I pay $815/mo. Of course, one thing I've noticed is that apartments down here are orders of magnitude nicer than ones up north. Washer and dryer hook ups, central heating and air, outside storage space, individual entrances... I haven't been able to find an apartment down here that didn't have all of that. Kind of like a small house.

We're only going to live there for like 9 months while we pay some bills and find a house. We have a garage here we use for storage so the second bedroom there is going to be for storage.

I'm at Belmont and Broadway, which is about 4-6 city blocks from Wrigley. For my Apt. I used Chicago Apartment Finders. It's a free service where you just give them all the info you want, location, price, amenities, and they find all the places for you and drive you there to check them out. And it's all free. Check them out.

We use our 2nd bedroom for storage/computer room 🙂

How are housing prices in and around Chicago? Higher housing prices generates a greater demand for rental properties, hence the higher apartment prices.

Look at my 2nd post.

As home prices go up, there are more people who cannot afford to buy and therefore must rent thus causing competition and creating an increase demand.
